Not the activity itself but that ours is work, which we like, and theirs is 'smacking a dimpled ball' or some such 'activity'. Either way, to each their own

Like gambling...tossing away money...skiing...slip sliding...fishing...is watching a bobber really an activity?! B

I used to scuba dive when I was younger and still down South. Tree climbing doesn't seem any odder to me than that, but people seem to accept scuba diving without a second thought. In both cases, you are sort of entering a different World from the everyday norm, but a World reasonably safe with the right gear and training. And people accept rock climbing, even ice climbing up here in the PacNW. Both of these seem a lot less friendly or inviting to me than being in a tree.

I recently brought climbing gear on my vacation. My wife and I stayed in a cabin in the woods on the beach, in a state park. It was great to climb right next to the water. She did not give it a second thought when she saw my pelican case packed by the front door. She knew I was crazy before she married me. Now it is her problem, but she is ok with that. Others may think I am crazy and some think it is cool. To all those who think I am crazy, I say try laying back on a branch in a big tree overlooking the ocean and watch the sun rise over the water. Until you give it a try you are the crazy one for judging me.

This was my first time vacationing with climbing gear and I don't think I will ever hit the road without it. It was also nice to have a backup activity because plans change. My 22' sailboat only made it half way because I lost a wheel on the highway. Once I got the boat and trailer to a shop I was able to relax knowing I still had a whole state park of trees to climb. Pro tip: when climbing in state parks camo pants and brown shirts are your friend.

What about the fact that people may have to travel hours find rock formations to climb or multiple time zones to find ice to climb but most people have trees in their yards or at a friends place. Not to mention tree climbing can earn you money a lot easier than any rock or ice climbing.

You’re nuts for climbing those trees.... I’ve gotta go “draft” players for my make believe football team in a pretend football league.....NOT!

I would say carry on!

I started tree work late in life. I didn't think I'd ever use a chain saw, never mind climbing, and double never mind climbing with a chain saw. I thought I was just going to prune ornamentals, which I still love doing also.

My friends and family knew better than to comment on it. They know what I'm like.
My now ex wasn't too pleased and let me know often.
He: "Promise me you won't use a chain saw".
Me : "Don't worry, I'm not qualified on that". (notice I didn't promise not to get qualified).
Later....
He: "Promise me you won't use a chainsaw in a tree"
Me : "I'm not qualified to use a chain saw in a tree."
You can guess the rest.
The pic is my first 100 footer from 5 years ago. I had no idea I was on this path starting out.

I doubt I've ever been more than 100feet up a tree in my life.

@Frax; There are some tall trees in your area. I was there a couple of years ago or so.

By the way, I absolutely love the quote you have at the bottom of your posts. I'm going to have to borrow that one. It would be perfect on a poster, hanging on a wall in private quarters. Thanks for that.
