Falling Limbs

Tom and Sharon Lily had sent this picture to me recently. I thought that it might be interesting, if you haven't seen it yet.

Mark,
You might consider renaming the topic, falling ladders or flying man.
Interesting pic.. Do you think it's been manufacturred? Kinda like Lee Oswald on the cover of Life mag.
Check out the shadow under the guy's arm. Where else do you see any sun or shadow in the pic?
Daniel

Take a look at the log just ahead of his foot. there's a fuzzy shadow there.

I've heard back from a couple of WI arbos who saw the original in the paper last year.

With the power of Photo Shop one has to be a little suspicious though

very clear photo for objects in motion. Typically the objects moving would be somewhat blurry. Unless the photographer was using a high speed film or using a fast shutter speed.Being that it was a sunny day , I highly doubt any of these two things where being used. But , I could be wrong. Whoe knows, with todays cameras.

Look at all the sawdust in the air! I think the photo is real. The guy looks like the stereotypical homeowner who would fall off a ladder anyway. Regardless, the picture serves a purpose.

OK I'll bite.
Me tinks this pic is a fraud. The ladder rope and roofline in the backround would indicate this is the top of an extension ladder. That stub is definately 10+ feet up. Look at the camera angle. This pic was not taken from the ground. How much sense does that make?
I already mentioned the sun/shadow thing. "Fuzzy shadow" on the log is a good observation, and doesn't resonate with the clear lines of underarm shadow.
Next look at the stub. That's a pretty clean cut for a homeowner. Did he undercut it? Usually branches kick back far enough to knock out a ladder when they rip (haven't been undercut). There is a small rip around 7-8 o'clock, which could be consistent with the limb having been lowerred and the picture taken from a second floor window.
Next: What are the odds of the falling man , the chainsaw and the limb that knocked the ladder off, all being framed so nicely. Seems that the man should have been the last to go and it is unlikely that he could have caught up with the same branch that took out the ladder. And what are the odds that the saw ends up at that angle, like it was sitting on the ground.
Lastly the fact that it was published in a newspsper makes me that much more suspicious.
Any Wisonsonians have more fact?

C'mon Murph, you are looking into this too much. Print the picture and the next time a potential customer says he will do it himself, you can show it. You will probably score the job. Stick with pictures of Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster to critique.

It was an AP photo, and the picture posted above is not complete. The ladder is a 20' extension that is not extended.

When you see the whole picture you realize that his bottom foot is about 3-4 feet above the ground at the moment the picture was taken.

There are all or parts of 8 rungs visible. They are not paired so the lader must be extended and this could be the bottom half.
Jerry B., you do trees and photos.. What do you think.. is this pic for real?
Daniel

Looking at the size of this weekend warrior's gut there should have been a beer coming down as well, let's get real!

Seriously though have you ever seen a chainsaw lay flat as it was falling straight down? I would know.

Randy do you or someone you know throw alot of saws out of trees? I haven'r really seen much of that since I about 18. We had a guy working with us who drank so much coffee that he would throw a saw out if it didn't start by the second pull.

Hey BigJon,I saw our bucket guy throw a brand new 066 from 40 feet after an argument with my Dad and they fall handle first!

He bought that saw and was fired to say the least but back to the subject at hand I think Marks picture no matter what is a great messege to always hire a professional.

The story that I heard from two seperate sources is that the pic was submitted and won a journalism award in the Milwaukee area. From what I've gathered it isn't a fake or PhotoShop put-up.
