..... And I'm just a "new guy" here too, lol.

BTW Pelorus, I like that avatar, I've seen that tree somewhere before, I just can't remember where. Maybe I'll remember if I take my supplement pills.

My original avatar was a photo taken by James Field and listed in Wikipedia's entry for Gingko biloba.

As I am not sure how to attribute the photo to Mr.Field in the body of the avatar, it has been promptly removed, and a photo of myself dismantling an elm this winter has been substituted.

Thank you Yoyoman and Boreality for bringing this matter to my attention.

Wow! Really not my intention, I was just talking about the tree in your avatar not the property rights of the photo from Wikipedia. I see we are all a little touchy here.
Pelorus, I actually do know where a Gingko tree is and I would be happy to take a picture for you that you can FREELY use. This is really quite funny and has me smiling.

I got lucky and have a pro photographer girlfriend and she's friends with some awesome graphics people. They are well worth the money for marketing and it's a good feeling to do it right. But really Mr. Greene is starting a venture that will probably only make him poorer than he was working utility. There is room for discretion in every rule and with time he will turn out to be what he is. The market will reward him or not for the quality of his work not the photos on his website.

You can only run a bluff so far. Ask my competitors.

Pelorus, I do have one request, if you can edit out all the lengthy credits that were posted my web browser will then scroll this page correctly without having to change to 1600 pixels or more.

I seldom write this but LOL! (I am)

I didn't know till now that Wiki photos needed to be checked to see what conditions applied to their re-publication for personal use. A lesson learned.

Thanks anyway for the Gingko offer, Yoyoman.

I can only feel bad for a customer that fails to educate themself as to what they are getting into; fails to get referrals, verify credentials, get other estimates, etc.
What about the elderly victims preyed upon by scam artists? What about honest folks who take somebody at their word, and then get ripped off? Heard of Robert Herjavec, and the experience his mom had with a vacuum salesman? Worth reading.

When I encounter someone in my line of work that is promoting themself to be something that they are not, it bugs me because their misrepresentation affects this profession.

It's unfortunately the nature of the tree business currently. What does licensed, insured, and certified really mean anyway?

It could mean he has a driver's license, his house is insured and when he was young he got a level one swimming certificate. Even that would be a stretch for some of the jokers out there. Shady. Where do you think all that stolen equipment goes. It's often stolen from the guy who was nice enough to give them a job they didn't deserve.

What bothers me is that out of all this the guy who enters the public forum asking for input, who put his site out for review and was then called out for misrepresentation is classified as the victim here.

Concurrently, another guy, who simply states its wrong to steal others peoples property is classified as a basher and made to look they are in the wrong.

Maybe if someone stole your chipper, or you were a photographer, you would care.

I really dont understand the logic from some of you guys.

I hear about artistic copywrite a fair amount and it's wrong for sure. I felt he is a smart guy and probably learned his lesson. The damage is minimal. He's in a different market than the image he stole probably. I weighed that against the help he was asking for and what he was trying to accomplish. Getting going is the hardest part and slapping together any website helps.

When an established company does this, and they do, then ya give em hell. Just trying to walk a mile in his moccasins. It was awesome he came and asked for advice that's kind of what we're here for. I put his climbing safety above his website skills.

And he sounded like an old pro and we're not real good at technology. The first computer came to town when I was in grade 11 but I could kill at arcade Asteroids.

Ty boreality for your understanding. I shouldn't even post to this thread anymore I'm certian no matter what reasonable entry I make will only lead to more knit picking. A real good fellow on here mike told me to just ignore it but, ya here goes. First of all. pelorus... Did you even read this thread before you posted? You feel bad for the this and that. Amazing. I have 2 million dollars general liability with bolt. I'm licenced in washington county virginia. Taking down a tree is something I've done more times then I can count. In fact most of the trees I've delt with where layed down on a phone line with 1000's of pounds of pressure and just waiting to go off like a bomb. I've seen small chunks off wood shoot 200' in the air and thats no exaggeration. I merely wanted to know if you damn ax men have a fail safe for the really high climbs. I found the answer on the first page it was simple and much like the bucksqueeze just rap your lanyard once around the tree, a bit cumbersome but works. Now for you that are hellbent on the moral high ground and ya nick this is you. You have yet to make one resonable comment yet you refuse to shut your silly mouth. I'f I stole your chipper, really? thats your comparison to how my lack of having images of me in a tree corresponds? Your dumb bud and, ya your attacking me. For no good reason. I didn't take anyones chipper. Heck the photo's on my site. Even if they where good ol' boys in my own home town(and I seriously dought they are). I wouldn't be taking any bread from their table. What exectly is the point? I said it before and I'll say it again, come down of your cross, use the wood to build a bridge and, get over it! oh and btw thats not my words. Perhaps that could be your next beef with me? Either way, just so I don't sound to cocky I don't know crap about getting into the canopy with ropes am trying to learn. Did'nt know if there was a way to keep from gaffing out @ 80' in a tree but I did think the answer I got on page one would be the way to do it... I'd say thanks to all that helped but I did that already this is a worn out thread... nick, pelorus and, all you other haters let it go... hell you could even be right and im the one thats wrong. just let it go. take a deep breath, step away from the keyboard and let it go... ahh dont that feel nice?

JG, I apologize for not responding to your original post. When working aloft using a chainsaw you're required to have to points of tie in. So your lanyard or buck strap is for positioning and then your climb line can either be cinched around the trunk with a biner or as mentioned before an adjustable fiction saver. This would be the method used whether you're 20' or 80' off the ground.

Not sure which group you've placed me in but I'll reiterate that you're in business first and need to go about this as a business person vs. being a tree guy. Just like getting insurance to protect you everything else you do needs to be viewed in the light of how it effects the business. Stuff like the registering of your company name to ensure that you can legally use it to what your website contains. Just as there are those that will nitpick here the rest of the world will too.

Good luck with your venture!

That was me talking about the chipper theft and it was just different example. Don't blame Nick, anyway. The lanyard wrap wasn't really the best advice either. If the tree splits it's still gonna suck you in with a wrap. You need something that will self advance in case of a split or bark tear. I'm going to look for a picture or video I just saw one on Facebook.

Where your at you really should hang with some good climbers for a day or two. It would all seem simple but you have to see it in action.

The attachment shows someone elses set up. I keep the rings above the lanyard and the lanyard loose. I advance them both at once. This has more benifits than self rescue and split survival it makes movement to the backside as easy as leaning your head to change your balance and your on the backside and back. You see how the single rope is doubled that's what we call drt. It could be done with a cinch and a single line that would be srt.

On closer inspection I see he has a side loaded biner and there's a few other ways to set it up better but you get the idea.

Tree humper, you never said one thing to offend me, looking back why would you think you did? In fact you made a comment business man first. I feel that was one of the more valuable statements I've heard on this thread. That is one thing I'm begining to learn in my recent business venture. Boreality, still hanging on your every word, based on your attachment you got just what im saying. I like that set up and, I follow what your saying. Thanks for not giving up on me, I have alot to learn.

As has been said all we have are the written words to gauge what someone is saying. What is lost is about 90% of the message without the body language, tone and inflections.

Work on getting those pics of your co in action to use on your website vs. generic pics. It'll better market you and your business.
