Eye to eye splice rupture

macswan

Been here a while
My buddy who just switched to cordage from a Blake's was rockin this ice tail for about a month. I saw it and gave him a new piece of armor prus to replace it. I've never seen that happen. Anyone else?

It came from a catalog company. I have recently heard not great things about these large splicing operations. Curious if this is a sign of poor craftsmanship.

Looks like a poor taper on both buries, which would facilitate the ends coming out like that if the hitch config put a hard enough bend at those points. It could be repaired if the buries are long enough to re-taper properly and still have the appropriate length for a Class II splice.

I guessing you were on the older version of 10mm Bee Line, which would make sense. That was an issue that several people had. The newer version does not have the problem.

There were a few batches of HRC that did it, Bee Line is probably more known for it though. That splice just looks like the tapered ends backing out a bit, it happens all the time. That being said, it should be retired.

You all looking at the picture? Macswan says ice tail in the original post. That is what I see.

Whoever said it is a poor tail taper, I agree. Like Tuttle said, no real strength loss (long as the burry is of adequate length)

BUT . . . if you cut corners on one thing, you will cut corners on the next! (pun partially intended)

Retire. Get a better splice.

Tony, if you follow the thread, it gets away from discussing the cord in the pic to limb walker mentioning it happening with other cord, which we then discuss.
