Evergreen ID at Arlington Cemetery

Hey All! I was at Arlington Cemetery this past weekend and saw the evergreen pictured behind Arlington House in front of the Slave museum building.

Every time I've seen it I've wondered what it is but not being from that area I am stumped.

Its growth habit is not so much conical as it is spreading. Reminds me of a very, very old Picea abies that has had it's lower branches grow to large diameter and spreads out and away from the main tree.

I apologize for the single pic, I wasn't able to snap a full form pic.

Anyone know what it is?

I was thinking larix too but I would expect, being deciduous, it would be bare or just budding this time of year.

Sorry about the second pic. Camera bat failed. will repost soon. Meantime bark looks a lot like Norway spruce bark but darker.

I completely forgot about those, I would put my money on that as apposed to the larix cause like you said larix haven't budded yet, or at least round here.

That they are. At first glance their form and bark struck me as a Picea abies but the foliage was much more interesting and defining. I subsequently found several more on the National Mall that were cool specimens as well.

I believe its a Deodar Cedar. Very common tree in our area. Next time I go to Arlington, I will check it out to confirm.
