equalizing thimble tab style?

I am intrigued by the equalizing rope thimbles such as the newcos or better yet the SS ones from DMM.

First started thinking about them from oldfart's vids. I see sherrill carries a couple sizes of the bronze ones and TS says they will be carrying the smallest three sizes soon.

I see the DMM 8 mm thimble has the option of a inside tab. I can see it would be stronger, yet restrict the opening.

What is the intended purpose of the tab? Why only on the 8mm thimble?

I ordered the dmm 10mm to use with 3/8 tenex tec as a starting exploration point.

Yep, that's the ball catch.

Funny you posted this.. I was about to make a ghetto fmblsaver today with stuff I have around here just to see how smooth the 2 stainless thimbles are.

Ian, how would you compare it to a ring/ring or a pulley? There's not a ton of feedback on them out there.

The fimblsaver is right between a ring and ring and a pulley as far as friction goes. The way it is designed makes it really hard to get stuck, very cool piece of gear

Adam, the fmblsaver is great! It is simple and works well with our rough barked trees. The friction really is a middle ground, though I'd lean more towards the friction being like climbing off a pulley. I was surprised on the lack of feedback too, it's kind of a bombproof underdog... Bought on the advice of paul!

my only gripe would be I wish it was maybe a foot longer for big spar work... but that's just nitpicking.

Down here the longest one works for what we got,( that being said I choke the line mostly on sparwork ), but you have those big butt conifers correct... Happy New Year BTW...

What have we got on here, a bunch of Teufelberger sales people?

It's nice to be able to get all that feedback that fast. I did set up a couple thimbles in the garage and was pretty impressed. I'll probably bite on a fimblsaver soon too.

Adam, they have the DMM thimbles in 10mm on treestuff, I think some OP 10mm would make a nice one and you could do it yourself.

I had one made about 7' long and I liked it ok. Agree it's probably somewhere between a ring and ring and a pulley. My only gripe is that, while bombproof, if I bomb it out rather than string it out...with those steel thimbles it hits hard brah.

Yo Bonner I was going to thread the thimble then use a scaffold knot to close it. Does that seem right? Is there a spread hazard when it's loaded with your body weight. I may be thinking too much. I had mine spliced to address that but if I made one without splicing maybe that would be how? Thoughts? Also it seems like a scaffold knot would add bulk and increase the risk of getting it stuck...

It's 8mm rope (sirius?) doubled. Has a rope cover over that, so it's 17mm, I think.

Thanks and I didn't realized it was doubled for extra size. I was confused by the 17mm spec from the maker.

With a diy version one could use the 10mm ss thimble and double a 10mm line for even more surface on the tree.

Those folks implement some really clever ideas.
