employees sidework

if theyre a good employee they can use anything for personal use but i wouldnt loan any thing out for side jobs. i dont care if they do them but besides screwing up your equip. what if they get hurt using it? when i worked for some one else i only did side jobs that i had equip. for. like mangoes i never picked up jobs on the clock and will send someone down the road if they do it on my time

This is a timely thread, as a good friend of mine fell out of the tree he was removing this past Saturday. He was on a side job, and he and his wife will have to get along on her waitress salary for 6 or so months while he recovers. He only had a year of experience climbing, but he works (worked) for one of the top outfits in town. I'll post more about the accident in Awakenings as I get details. Sugar Maple split out on him and he fell 25 feet, breaking his Tib/Fib in nine places between the top of his spike pad and his knee.

Man that sucks. Hope he heals up fine and fast.

What happens as far as insurance for these guys that do side jobs. If they work for you and drop a tree on someones roof you're covered by your liabilty, but if they do this on their own they probably do not have their own liabilty plan right?

That is one of the reasons I don't do side jobs. When I can afford the extra expense then I'll get the insurance. BTW, what does liability insurance cost in the US? I'll be moving down to NJ in summer 2007.

Sidework is a very good thing, using something that dosen't belong to you for free is not.
I agree with what you did, if he can't do the work without your equipment he should sell the work to you.

You made the right offer.
