Dumb idea or not?

I only have 1 throw bag right now (although I might pick up a spare one at Menards since I saw that sale earlier today…) But I needed a weight on my climbing line for rope walking so I grabbed a bottle of water, and with some para cord I made a prussik loop with a Canadian jam knot, then tied it around a bottle of water. It only takes up 10 inches of space from the top of the prussik to the bottom of the water bottle, so I can still start with my foot ascender nice and low.

Plus when up in the canopy, I can pull up some water whenever I want.

Dumb idea or not?

Good idea. I use CT right foot ascender so after about 5 ft of rope below me it tends just fine. That's about 2 or 3 steps manually feeding the rope through it then I stop and connect my SAKA then I'm ready to go. I usually go ahead and tie my saw to the rope and let it just barely touch the ground. It keeps me from having to wait on someone else do it. Depends on the climb ahead but I try to only have 5 or 10 ft of line on the ground unless otherwise needed. One of those aluminum water bottles with the plastic cap with a loop in it might work good too with a mini biner and a small prusik to adjust to just the right height when the rope is weighted.

You can add a bit of weight by tying a monkey fist in the tail of your rope

If you’re careful you can tie it in a slipped configuration. Then you can shake off the monkey fist and loose it
This works better with rope that’s supple
A monkey fist in a slipped configuration? You must be an old-timer. I’ve used that in front of some younger guys and they’re astounded.
