DRT and SRT rope

I am going to be buying my first climbing rope soon, and am a little confused on which one to get. I would like to find something I can use for SRT using a hand ascender and foot ascender and DRT body thrusting. If someone could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. I have currently been climbing with spurs using a borrowed rope, but would like to start getting my own gear and stop knicking up all of the trees I climb. I have been leaning towards the Poison Ivy since it is slightly larger, but am not sure if I should go another route. Thanks in advance.

Proably just try P.I or tacyhon. Both are on the upper end scale of ropes. Arbormaster is decent rope if your looking for strong rope, something you could beat up on and not feel so bad about trashing down the line. Ropes are hard to tell untill you get your hands on them. Try something and if you don't like it buy something else when your ready to buy a new one.

I would suggest the tachion purely because of its low stretch and its ability to have both ends spliced. The poison ivy can only have one end spliced at first and you will find yourself beating up on only half of your rope

Low elasticity will give less bounce and less shock absorption.

Less bounce will help ascending(unless you have such timing to really play off said bounce; problem with that is the bounce w-ill vary each ride; and during the ride as you climbed); but have less absorption if ya lost balance etc.

In SRT; full body weight will be on the single leg of the rope. This will give more elastic response from the rope for bounce and shock absorption. But, in DdRT; you will have only half body weight on each leg of the line, so will get less bounce and less shock absorption.

These considerations could get a lil'more personal; because a massive 135#'er like me; will not get as much bounce out of a rope as someone 2x as heavy. Also, the support itself could come into play; by virtue of it's flexing to both bounce and absorb.

Also; the ultimate decision might depend on how high you climb. With the bodyweight far from the TIP; there will be more elastic response/ bounce and absorption. But; when the bodyweight is closer to the TIP; there will be less elastic response; by the factor of how much 'rubber band' component of the rope is in the system.

2 ropes would give more choices; and place less useage wear on each! Also, serve to expand your knowledge and feel for such things more fully; whereby the next round you will be answering, instead of asking these perplexing, multi-dimensional things.

Another thing to consider is are you going to be natural crotching when body thrusting using Drt? If so you want something that is made to take more abuse such as the new all gear neopro. I just got 200 ft. and spliced it up which was a pain but I love it.

I climb 1/2" arbormaster at work for both SRT and drt. There might be a stretch here and there but its not horrible. I have blaze at home but have not had much time on it. I'd say buy something cheap and really learn how to climb and know what you want before you drop a lot of money on rope. Give it some time and really find out what specifics you want.

I am going to be using a handled ascender (not sure which one yet) and more than likely a foot ascender. As for rope wear, I use a rope saver most of the time, so it won't get quite the abuse.

I've been using Fly and FireFly (same thing, different color) for SRT and DdRT. Had a Blaze that I was happy with but it went AWOL after a TCC (my fault, hope the new owners like it). Have some Tachyon on order.

Use Petzl hand ascenders, HRC for friction knots, and now an Eddy. They all do well with the Fly's texture and diameter.

Fly does have a little stretch and its nice and light. But, I wish I had my KMIII in the Eddy today, with 30mph winds. A more static rope means less potential to be catapulted when limb surfing. The weight is something to think about when you're hauling that tail up and down all day.

O.T.: Got to do some Tarzan swings with the Edelrid Eddy! No smokin hands, simple to throttle friction when I want to and not when I can get the knot to slide.

I could be out on a limb.

Well, I was planning on getting the Taychon since I haven't heard anything but good about it, but I ended up picking up 150' of spliced poison ivy for a very good price. Thanks for everyone's help.
