Double Braid Splice: Toss vs. Samson

I have been having trouble with my double braid splices. I am using the samson splicing manual and i can not manage to get the splice buried correctly. Here are two pictures of some 10mm bline. The same thing is happening with velocity. After I bury the core back into the cover on the last step (before whipping) I am able to pull the splice out with my hands. I know something is going on, I just dont know what?! Any suggestions please. I read you guys talking about stiching the crossover.?.?

Welcome Joe! You'll find some wonderful people here who'll be glad to help you. Thanks for posting.

I would suggest making sure that you are burying it far enough to the "R" as banjo mentioned and also that you are not tapering the cover too much.

Yes. I spliced some poison ivy as well just recently and it seemed to bury ok. I had to pound on it with a small hammer, but I got it done. I put it on a winch and then on a truck back to the base of a tree. Both times the splice held. The junk rope I had it tied off to broke both times instead. What is the deal with stitching the crossover I read about in a previous post? I have tried 10mm bline, posion ivy, velocity and some larger diameter rigging line. Have only seemed to be successful with the poison ivy and 9/16 rigging line.

Joe- the double braid splice can be very confusing...at first. It is also very rewarding after you get it. Eventually you'll wonder how it was ever complicated.

You probably won't want to hear this now, but I suggest putting the beeline, velocity, and poison ivy aside for a moment. Get some double esterlon, stable braid, or some of the polyester sail lines like sta-set. These lines are easier to splice. You are dealing with a lot right now. The double braid splice, as I said before, can be complicated and if you start out with a stiff rope like what you're using, you'll find yourself fighting so many things at once, you won't know what is the actual holdup.

Your second pic looks as if the cover is bunched up in the eye. If that is the case, you need to keep more tension on the eye when burying.

How far are you burying things? Would you mind taking a few moments and describing your splice, step by step? It should only take a minute to type it all out! :)

Hi Nick, no problem. As I said before I am using the samson splicing manual. 1st I measure one full fid and mark R. 2nd i measure anywhere from 4 to 14 inches depending on my desired eyes size. This is mark 1. I then extract the core from this point and mark where the core meets the cover at the extraction point. I measure 1 short fid and mark (II) on the core (measuring away from the end of the rope. Next, I measure one full fid plus another short fidd and mark (III). Now, from mark R on the cover I count 8 strands towards the short end of the rope and mark the 8th. I then mark every 4th and 5th pair of strands untill i reach the end of the rope. I then cut the strands and remove them for the tapering of the cover. Next I pull the cover through the core from mark (II) and out at mark (III). Everything goes great up to this point. I then come about 1/3 a fid length below where i extracted the core from the cover and pull the core through from the 8th strand I marked to this new mark.Step 8 in the manual is where i do get a bit confused. "marking reduce volume tail core".I pull the crossover tight and smooth it all out. Then 8A says to measure 1/3 fid from start of reduction cuts toward end and mark. Cut off remaining tail at this point at 45 degree angle. I am doing this to the core I just pulled through my new mark right? Step 9 is burying the exposed core. This step usually either goes smooth or I have the worst time trying to complete it. I have tried hammering it, tying it off with some thowline at the crossover and applying tension, but like i said it either goes smooth or not at all. Once I do get it buried I can usually pull it right out by my own strength. Very Very frustrating!! I hope I have explained this well enough for some help. Can you explain maybe a little better about step 8, " marking reduce volume tail core"?
Thanks, Joe

Joe, I have to admit that step 8 and 8a in the Samson manual confused me too when I first read it. I'm still not sure about it so I follow a different method.

What I do is follow the directions that Brion Toss gives for this part of the splice. I'll pull out about 8 diameters of the core tail where it exits the cover and then ravel the ends and cut it back on a 45 deg. angle.

I'm sure that Nick will be able to help you better and give us all some hints too.

Rich, you're right. I have the Yale instructions and they are better than Samson's (as far as understanding them).

I agree with Nick. I think Brion Toss' directions are the easiest to follow and understand. Also, I just did a splice using the Toss method and the tucks were a lot smoother to me.

Does anyone have a video clip of 16 strand eye splice being made?

I learned how to do it in the workshop, but am not comfortable climbing on it until I get my splices break tested.
