Descenders

Oh- to answer your question, I have the pirahna. It's pretty good. I like that there are so many configurations. It seems to work it practically all scenarios. It is particular about which carabiner it'll let you use. It prefers the petzl ball lock or triact...go figure!

Have you considered a rappel rack? Just about everything else will twist the line.

How bad do the lines twist? enought o be VERY annoying and cost me time? I am looking to streamline my set-up and save a few $$$$.

Any links to the rappel rack?

Don't get a fig 8 then. I hate the twist. It's even worse when your line is near anther rigging line and they start to twist around eachother!

Gri Gri has something similar. If you pull it too hard or jerk on it, it will lock up. I like it but I'm not sure I would want it in the application you’re asking about. It tends to twist the rope some. It might cause what Nick is talking about.

You could always use an 8 and soft lock it. I have a rectangular 8 and it doesn't twist the rope too bad. But I haven’t descended longer than 50 feet on it. Its better than the Gri Gri.

It's a standard caving/rescue friction device.
Karst Sports has a few

I use a mini rack with hyper bar. I don't like the twist with 8's. I don't like the grigri as a descender. Prefer the ID or Eddy if you're going that route.

I use a grigri and a figure 8. The grigri can be finicky and difficult to get a smooth speed at times. My figure 8 is great. I use a standard no eared figure 8 and have never had problems with it. Its simple, cheap and works well but there is no backup built in like the grigri so you will find yourself spending some time setting a backup

I owned both the I'd and grigri. The only difference I saw was in size and price, otherwise they seemed to work the same IMO.

Two primary diff's:
1. the I'D has a Large size that can be used on 1/2" ropes whereas the GriGri only goes up to 11. Maybe 11's good enough for amps, but not some ropes.

2. the I'D has an anti-panic lockout that will lock the descent if you pull the handle too hard. With the GriGri, it's just down faster!

there is an I'd made for larger diameter ropes.

That was my point - the GriGri (11mm max) is equivalent in size to the I'D Small (11.5mm max). The additional I'D Large is something with which the GriGri can't compete.

The Eddy has the lockoff feature too and can be feathered by either pulling or pushing on the handle.

I've heard a lot of good about the Eddy and would like to try it.

the grigri handles a bit larger diameter. I use both the poison ivy and tachiyon and both work just fine. The anti panic for the grigri lyies in the speed your other hand let's the rope feed through. Its like using a figure 8 that locks itself off automatically. It repelles the same way, using both hands, one on the descending lever and the other controlling the speed of the rope feeding through it

The small version of the I'd only takes up to 11mm. I did use it once on my tachiyon and it worked just fine, but to use a 1/2 line you have to buy the large I'd.

I am looking for something to run velocity through, that will allow fast descents, and not twist.

I need to come down as fast as safely possible, but without a ton of added headaches. also being able to tie in mid line is key, no running the tail through the device every time.

I'd go with the grigri, only 70 bucks compaired to the I'd that is 190 and the eddie is 149. I have heard good things about the eddie though but I've never used one. I often us my grigri for long quick descents and have had no problems with it. No twisting and what nots, but it does take. Day or so to get used to hooking it onto the line properly in a quick manner. I'd send ya mine to borrow but its an everyday tool for me
