Dealing with dead trees

lots of great advice you all have already said.

so there is not too much to add to this that is new, except, if you have a narrow bit of ground to get a mini or skid loader back to the tree, bring the loader in with an auger attachment, drill a deep hole near the dead tree, then bring in a utility pole (telephone pole) with the loader, plant it. friction saver attached to top of pole with climbing line before you plant it. Now you have a solid tie in, ..... but for only mid size tree heights.

another idea for non accessible backyards with a dead brittle tree and no other trees, buildings or high objects. if a field nearby, rent a hot air balloon pilot and balloon. haul balloon to work site with a skid loader as the anchor. Balloon floats over the yard. Climber repels from balloon basket and dismantles the tree.

I know a balloonist in my area. Rode with him once. He would probably do it for around $200 an hour.

I'm still looking for the perfect tree and landscape to do it someday.........

A number of years ago a buddy of mine and I scratched out the numbers for how much helium it would take to elevate a climber above the ground. Large weather balloons can be bought pretty cheap. Finding the buoyancy of a cubit helium at various temperatures and how much volume was needed isn't hard to calculate.

The idea was to fill the balloons and guy them with ratcheting bollards to three points. The TIP would be slung below and the climber could be moved in any direction with the three guy outs.

The cost wasn't too high either compared with putting a climber at risk in a brittle dead tree.

Setting up an antennae structure is another solution. Setting a utility pole is one that I never thought about :)

Scaffolding towers aren't expensive and can be dismantled on the way down.

Postponed big dead Poplar to do in January/February, just to wet and heavey this fall.
Frozen tree will be safer for me and less costly for HO.
A dryer tree is safer as well imo

You don't have to be a cowboy to work dead trees. Decide if it's safe from the ground. Walk or run away if it doesn't feel right but if you've declared it safe by the previous methods then climb it like it's safe using appropriate precations. Climbing scared isn't fun or safe. If your up there you might as well enjoy it.

There's also the feelig the tree gives you as it starts to move. Sad but that's the primary method I use. For my war story for this season I had a large poplar I had to half with two safe tie ins but I pulled the bottom 50' over with one hand breaking it at the root plate. $300, giddyup.
