Custom saddle work

Just a thought, if a 1200lb horse breaks a halter or "harness", it just runs a bit. If a 160lb climber breaks a stitch the same way, splat! Personally, I know the box stitch from repairing my own tack - trust it on my riding gear but I don't want any lingering doubts when I an bailing off a limb and swinging over to another.

A good rider has a balanced seat and stays on the back of a horse and the saddle is just an aid in balance but you are not hanging your weight or life on it. Like climbing and putting your weight only on the limbs.

It takes those brave enough to try new things for climbing to evolve. My life is short enough as is.

Hang your LIFE on what ever blows yer hair back. My point is that reguardless of how much weight they can hold, they are not designed to hold a life.

Some feel comfortable with rope from the hardware store and duct tape.

Save some money and go down to the local feed store/tack supplier and replace biners with the cheap snaps they sell for those harnesses. Double locking or not, they hold those huge draft horses right?

I trust my life on equipment designed to hold my life. It is a blind faith and truth that I can rely on - I know I can swing off any limb at any height and not worry because the equipment is designed to hold a life.

Some pioneers will push the boundaries.

if i hire a tack shop to fix my saddle, and i'm climbing one day, the saddle breaks and i get hurt...who is liable. me? the shop? the saddle manufacturers?
it seems like things get fuzzy here. i know it's sad to have to look at things from this perspective, but nowadays, one can't afford not to.

just something to think about.

A living tree is alive and thus a life??

I like as few unknowns as possible. If you want to trust yer life on some farrier/saddle maker person, go for it eh?

Take out as many weak links as possible. I know the climbing system will not fail that is a faith I can have. Something I don't have to worry about. My life experience and academic knowledge of tree species and tree dynamics/statics removes doubts I have of tree failure. Therefore, when I go from one limb to another it is straight up no worries.

Like I said before, there will be pioneers who take risks and lead the way.

Nate and others, I am not impressed by your willingness to trust implicitly anything 'branded' by a manufacturer (like Buckingham) regardless if the guy who actually made your saddle has 10 years or 10 days experience, but would flatly refuse to consider that an experienced SADDLE maker could know how to attach a D-ring to a saddle. I do not take my life or my gear lightly, and trust MY OWN judgement as final say-so before trusting ANY equipment regardless of manufacturer. I would interview anyone who was going to modify my saddle and make certain that they understood the requirements as well as the properties of any material they would use on my saddle. They would probably make it STRONGER than original and feel good about helping me out with their knowledge and experience.

I'm all but certain that a manufacturer like Buckingham would most certainly slime out of ANY liability for a failure of one of their saddles even if it had never been modified. All they have to say is that it was worn and should have been retired.
