crazy slacklining video..

yeah! until my toes get some more brains (??!). or an overhead rope parallel to the slackline at least - sort of training wheels, for the ambitious over 40 set :)

That's a good one. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was told that a certain dinosaur had their brain in their toe...not that I am calling you a dinosaur. But you did mention over 40 (no worry, I'm over 50).

That overhead safety sounds like the way to go...would probably need to be at least 12-15 feet up so you have room to drop...or have a belayer, that you trust a lot, to work with you...as you bounce up he pulls in slack, etc...same as trampoline artists do.

its not as hard as it looks. most people (of some athletic persuasion) can make good progress in an afternoon. the hardest part is simply getting up on the line.
While being a slack line, it really needs to be tensioned pretty tight. This can be done using some arborist tricks of mechanical advantage, much like tensioning a speed line. That webbing is pretty strechy stuff, so if you dont get it tight you have to have it pretty high off the ground at the ends.
I cant think of anything better to become in tune with core muscles and balance.

It is real easy to take some pretty mean spills as the line will start swinging back and forth then throw you like a sling shot.
The trick is in the legs and keeping that swing under control while maintaining your upperbody in a yoga like position. I look at the end of the line, looking down throws off your posture. Lets make sure we set one up in Minneapolis! its a great time kill.

I've done it a little bit. Had one out my front door, about 30' long, maybe chest high for a few months. The best trick I could do was sit on it facing perpendicular, then go from sitting to standing without touching the webbing with my hands. It looked prety good, I spose!

I like the surfing thing. That looks like fun!

thanks for the tip! bought a slacklining book last week by scott balcom, the guy who first walked the lost arrow gap, and one phrase that stuck out was "steer with your knees". intriguing. if only it would stop raining!

Last year I did some slack lining, fell on my ass a few times. I never got very far with it but it sure looks like fun and looks like it would be great practice for tree climbing. This year I’m going to take it up again and see it I can get the hang of it. Kathy lets get together when things dry out a bit.

If you both practice a bit then maybe you could show us how good you are at the "Climb Like the Champions" class coming up, or "Slackline like Champions". What do you think?

Great video,I have seen one person with one in their backyard, was not that high off the ground, he's also really into tree climbing. The last one I have seen was at a Fat Tire Beer festival in town and a bunch of drunks were trying it out, rather humurous.

hey tom,
boy i'd like to say i might have a chance of not making a total idiot out of myself, but that might be ambitious. we could probably set one up for fun though, that anyone could try. maybe with an overhead belay to appease the liability insurance people. are you coming?
k.

Kathy,

Am I coming? Heck yeah!! I'll be dragging along my one of my guys too. Well, I hope we got registered in time...Hmmm
I thought it would be fun to come out and learn from the masters.

If you still want, I can make a copy of those treehouse plans.

hi gary,
the class was set up by our chapter (PNW) and is a one day class open to anyone as far as i know. i think dan has a curriculum up his sleeve - little climbing, little throwball tricks, little footlocking. bit of a hike from atlanta though, as it's near seattle. there's probably more info on the website. anyone who wants to know more can pm me and i'll dig up my last newsletter.

It is tough stuff. I tried it after rock climbing. one guy there made it look easy. Its challenge is addicting.
