Crane Rigging & Knots in Them

Re: Crane Rigging & Knots in Them

I don't blame you at all Jamin. I don't think we don't comply, I just think that the verbiage in the standards do not specifically address what we are discussing here. I would be very surprised to hear of any inspector that would write a ticket on this method alone.

It can't allways be done by the book of Hoyle. It's kinda fun to hang your out thier once in a while, just don't leave it out thier to long or someone will whack it.

That would then put you in violation of ASME B30.9 - It says that you cannot make a sling by putting a knot in it.

So with this stated, spider legs are a big no no, since you have to tie a knot to creat how long you need the sling to be.?????

Not using a knot in lieu of a splice I believe means that you cannot tie say a bowline and then use that to create a girth hitch. I believe it is in place because that would then limit your capacity an additional say 50%.

I emailed the rigging expert again on this and he said [ QUOTE ]
If the sling has an eye one end and the other end is just a Bitter end, then you would have to put a hitch in it. You must also take your deductions from working load limit for what you are doing. If the sling has a eye each end, you cannot put a knot in it. That would then put you in violation of ASME B30.9 - It says that you cannot make a sling by putting a knot in it.

To me this means you can't use knots at all, if you use a sling in a vertical configuration you must have some sort of attachment hardware, now use a bowline to form an eye for the same hardware, you didn't hitch it in any way, but you are still in violation because you are using a knot "in lieu of a splice"
