Crane/powerline survivor

Re: Crane/powerline survivor

the picture is real, i took the picture. the only thing i did was lighten it a little bit so you could see the climber and his saw. i don't know anything about the paper removing it. its only a small weekly paper. i still have the original picture on my camera card.

Re: Crane/powerline survivor

Well heck then, it all must be true.

Even if it weren't real. There are still many lessons to be learned with the situation.
I, personally, would like to see the limb which caused the whole thing to happen. It is out of the frame from that photo.

Maureen. Did you happen to get any other photos of the job? And did you capture one with a wider view of that same crane pick? Hopefully, you can clarify some things for us.

I'm kind of on the fence here. I don't know what to believe. But, like Frans pointed out, the news paper removed the photos. I'd like to know why.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with me this evening Maureen. You captured something that any climber who works around wires wants to see but prays they make it through their whole career not seeing.

With Google street view I can see the tree on the property. By 'driving' down to the end of the block I can see the distribution tower. It is a single, round tower. With a few more calls I should be able to find out what the voltage is in the lines.

Tomorrow I'm going to call the crane company to try and connect with the crane operator. Today I left a message for the climber. Let's hope that I can talk with him too.

Sometimes there is no X File started. Sometimes what is seen is just what it appears. Then, all it takes is a few phone calls to confirm what's seen. Are the original skeptics ready to take off their foil hats yet?

The newspaper has the pics up for a week. When this week's paper came out they made room for a current [there's a punny word just waiting] picture and don't archive the previous week. This was not published in the Minneapolis Star/Tribune or St. Paul Pioneer Press after all

Re: Crane/powerline survivor

it's a weekly local paper. the new paper comes out on tuesday's.....i think they only run them a week. i have many more pictures......many!!! (yes some from same pick) i was using a telephoto lens 75/300, so i was a good 40 feet or more from the tree. i don't even know how to use photo shop....wish i did!!

Re: Crane/powerline survivor

my house, my tree!! i was photographing them lift the huge limbs over my garage into the driveway/street out front. i just got lucky hitting the shutter at the right time. i have many, many pictures before/after.

Re: Crane/powerline survivor

The lanyard looks like 5/8 or 3/4 three strand manila to me. Maureen sent me a lot of other pictures of the removal. Tomorrow I'm going to study them closely.

You weren't half as lucky as that arborist! Congrats on taking what is going to become an all time classic arborist 'Darwin Award' photo.

Re: Crane/powerline survivor

Well thank you both, Tom & Maureen.

What a rare photo!

In today's computer environment where what you see is not necessarily reality, it is natural for us to question.

That picture will go a long way to helping to educate us (working tree guys and gals).
Your picture and the time you spend relating your story on this web site will indeed help others.
Thank you

Re: Crane/powerline survivor

Tom,
Thanks for posting this.

Maureen,
Great shot, I'm very glad this had the outcome it did, and we're not reading about another death in the industry.
I would love to see the rest of the pics.

Re: Crane/powerline survivor
