CRANE!! AM I DREAMING?

I think it was used for roofing. I looked at another crane that has the reel and it was previously used by a roofing company. I would have them remove the reel. I don't ever see myself using it.

Okay,
Any thoughts on this one. I called this company and they really don't know a lot about this crane. Said it was once owned by a rental company, then a tree company bought it. But found that it was too big and they never used it. They had a smaller crane they used more. The tree company traded it in towards some other equipment.
These guys did say I can take the truck to my mechanic and have it looked over. I can also get the crane inspected by a third party inspection company. I think they will split the cost on that with me..... Thoughts??

Looks nice but the story doesnt add up, never heard too big about a boom truck.

I guess they had a crane already. They bought this one because they thought a larger one would be better. However, they found that is just sat at the yard all the time. They wanted some other equipment and traded the never used crane towards other equipment. That is the story I was told. However, it is used. I have to do my due diligence to inspect it and see what it actually is. People always over-talk what there selling. Problem is these guys don't know much about this crane. I have bought stuff from them in the past and there really straight shooters. I bought a chipper from them and it ran great! No problems.

A good idea of who you're buying from is half the battle. Do you have a crane mechanic that you trust to look at it for you?

We have a good guy here he actually works at a forklift dealer, but he used to be a crane operator and has been a crane mechanic for decades.

I'd go to the company you think you may use to service your future crane and talk with the manager about all the future service work you will bring to him, then ask if his best mechanic would come with you to check out a crane, paid of course.

Do you have an Altec dealer near by that could give it an inspection. I could see it being to big depending on the company's home range. There are lots of areas around here that thing wouldn't even fit down the street without major issues. Hell they plow some of the streets around here with atv's due to width and overhangs.

Yeah, we have a dealer but there not super close. Nothing is close to me. Do you think they have a mobile inspector? Thats how we get out bucket truck inspected. They come to us.

We can shoehorn the 40 and 75 ton into
Very tight spaces in the city or country, don't be weary about the length any good operator can get a crane into a tight space !
Yeah, I am not worried about it. I think I could make it work. Plus, I like the idea of throwing a log or two onto the deck. Also(I know this is not allowed, but I do it) I like to jump off the crane A LOT and help with things on the ground. Or unsling the sling so they guys can be cutting or loading logs. The load chart looks impressive too.

Ha ha ok, well think about winter work when you have a heater on in the cab and are nice and warm! Lol! I understand your thoughts totally though!

Well those cold winter days I will have an appointment to attend and they guys can run the crane those days:) I hear you though too, the cab has it's benefits too. Like today when it rained all day and I had to sit on the log truck feeding the chipper.

The altec has a decent chart for a 26 ton. It will need 6 new tires and possibly an alingment from the looks of the tires that are on it.

You have a good eye. I only noticed the tires because I looked at the truck in person a few months ago. The rears are not in great shape. They might re-cap them for me if I negotiate that into the deal.

A rear mount would be nice though.

Touche Touche! You are pretty correct about that. I have a rear mount log loader and there are so many days I wonder how I would have accomplished a job with out the rear mount. I image the crane would be the same way. But, nothings that says I can not work up to a rear mount. Get this one as a stepping stone?
