Correct CT license, but certification????

Re: Fake ISA certification number

is the license mandatory to do tree work in MA or is it a voluntary program..

is it (the test ) given by the dept of ag or the Massachusetts Arborist Association.

just curious

Re: Fake ISA certification number

It is a voluntary program, and the test is given by the MAA.

From their website:
"The Massachusetts Arborists Association (MAA) is proud to sponsor the Massachusetts Certified Arborists (MCA) program. The MCA program is a voluntary certification program initiated in 1957 by leading Massachusetts arborists. Since the program’s inception, more than 800 tree care professionals have obtained the MCA designation.

The purpose of the MCA program is to raise the level of public awareness as to the importance of working with trained professionals, and to provide a means of self-improvement and continuing education for the certified professional.

In short, the MCA program helps to build professionals, enhance businesses, and protect consumers."

The term "certified arborist" belongs to the ISA.

Question: The ISA site does show they own the trademark for "ISA Certified Arborist", but does ISA really 'own' the term "certified arborist" ... just asking?

Re: ISA certification number

New Jersey has it's own cert. test.
Started in 1941, 575 have passed the exam.
Roughly 6 hrs. 3hrs outside for a field exam
tree identification, disease, pests ect.
3hrs indoors to finish approx. 250 questions
t and f, multi choice, fill in and labeling.
Roughly 70% do not pass first time, although this year
that number was slightly lower.
The state has(will)change the wording to L.T.E
and do away with Certified Tree Expert.
Licensed Tree Expert is the new designation
32 C.E.U.s every two years to keep your license.

How does the ISA test compare to the CT test?

Re: ISA certification number

So in states that have their own cert. program, is it better to have the state's cert or the ISA's?

Can you work in self-certified states without their certification? Are there laws requiring state certification?

Wouldn't it be nice if only certified arborists could practice tree care? We need to get law on the books.

Re: ISA certification number

In CT, you need the state license to prune and treat trees. No license required to chop em down.

Re: ISA certification number

steph,

I will try to explain what I know about state license programs compared to self governing outside groups.

If a state has a license program such as contractors license or electrical license then you must get that license in order to legally hire out to do that task.

on the other hand if you belong to a private organization that offers a organizational certification to do a trade or task it is not a state license.

if a particular state accepts private certification in lieu of a state license then most states would review the certification and then issue a license based on their acceptance of that certification.

some states REQUIRE A STATE ISSUED LICENSE to perform certain jobs some states do not.

organizations such as the ISA and MAA are not state government agencies and therefore they are not the states governing body for that trade.

if you live in a state that requires a license to do a trade such as tree care then you need to go to the licensing agency to get the license and the private certification that you have is not legit.

Self governing bodies entail more than just a license to do a job they are organizations that educate etc.
