conceal carry permit

Spent 12 hours yesterday, Sunday from 7 am to little after 7pm and received a certificate to go and get a conceal carry permit from the county Sheriff. Long day with test and shooting over a hundred rounds at range with my Glock 19, 9mm but well worth it all imo. We have been having persistent and regular thefts at my business property and there has been mass burglaries in the immediate area at businesses and residences.

Months ago had a 5,000 dollar dump trailer stolen in the middle of the night. 5 months ago in broad daylight caught a thief hiding under a truck while he was stealing metal in implements etc from my lot and got him in a choke hold then waited almost a half hour for the cops to come. They said they were eating lunch. He and his gf in the car nearby with heroin and other stolen property had 5 felonies at that time and previous long record. They let him out that night like usual and he/they never showed for the court date.

I have to go to my property sometimes at night and feel very exposed. Many home invasions lately in the greater city. Pretty much have to protect your own now as cops are just after the fact report fill out officials. Anybody else do this?

LEO's don't enforce anything. I was robbed at my home last Jan and called the police to get help.....answering service. WTF I said and drove to the station myself. There I waited five or so minutes for an officer to come in. Turns out he was sitting in a parking lot 800' from my house. After he got the facts that was it. Nothing! My wife, who is a journalist for a local paper ,sent an email to the chief. I got a call within an hour of that email. Again, WTF? Turns out they found the two pill heads that nabbed my stuff and to this day I still haven't received any monies promised, nor do I expect to.

Enough of that. I have had my CC high cap permit for twenty years and have never wanted a reason to need it or use it. Yeah, I go to the range or to the local club and let a bunch fly, but I am not sure I ever want to be in That position to Have to make That decision. Congratulations on your accomplishment. I hope you never need to use it. But if you do, One shot One kill. Dead men don't tell stories.

"would you have shot him instead of choked him?"

No he did not attack me and I would go to jail for that. I detained him. Taught in class...you cannot use gun to protect property. You must be in fear for your life from an attack.

this is one reason i moved out to the country . not that it doesnt happen out there but it is very unlikly . i lived in a small town before and there were so many drugges and welfare bums . people dying from overdoses and lots of robberies . i had to get out . cars were always being broken into all the time . police were no help . they were under investigation also . old ladies were getting mugged during the day . i do not have a permit to carry but i do own guns . if someone breaks in my home they will not make it out . i also have a alarm system on my home . maybe you should put some tracking devices on your equipment so if it is stolen you can track it and get it back . i have no respect for the scum of the earth . you are a better man then me for just detaining him in a choke hold . i would have kick his a*s he would be begging for the police to come !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Be careful Dave.
Shoot someone and you can almost guarantee a civil suit, even if you are in the right. That could cost you everything you own.
On a side note, protecting my family would be worth the financial nightmare.

That was the lesson I took from the conceal, carry course... shoot anybody for any reason and among many other unpleasant things, you'll go bankrupt paying lawyers.

Yeah, they covered that comprehensively, but like Jim said, I will protect my family and protecting my family involves protecting my own life. Outside of that the only shooting I wish to do is at the range and I kind of enjoyed that esp. out in the country on the outside range.

CC permit here, and I do so regularly. As Blinky alluded to, if you pull it out... you better be in the right, and prepared to take it all the way. Once that chain of events is in motion, it can't be undone. Know the laws of your land intimately.

Cameras can be a great deterrent. I know one arb who has multiple cameras covering his small yard, and the sign says "Smile! You were on camera way before you ever got here."

You know NETree, not only would a camera set up not be a deterrent around here, they would likely steal the whole camera system as well.

You just have a picture of a thief you likely don't know. The cops couldn't care less other than the time it takes them to fill out the report.

Last week in broad daylight in my very affluent town my gm is in the backyard with his 200 and blower midway up the driveway on the busy 4 lane thoroughfare. He hears tires squeal, this about noon. He runs up front and a pickup has fishtailed down the road with the saw and blower. If he got us a half hour earlier he would have also gotten a thousand dollar Honda quiet generator, ms660, drill, compressor. This is prob. why he pulled off the caper. He probably saw that stuff first and came back.

Yesterday I am told on a large township project just 2 miles up the hill overnight they robbed all the equipment on the jobsite (again in my affluent town) including trailered generator and lots of other stuff.

I think you can fall into a false sense of security with a lull and not recognize what would happen if you inadvertently crossed paths with one of these perpetrators to absolutely no fault of your own and with only the best of intentions in your own disposition. These are not nice people that follow the rules.

Would having a gun detterred any of those robberies? I personally love guns but could not stand the responsibilty or the burden of carrying one with me or on me. I think it would so drastically impact my quality of life. What do you do with the gun when you climb a tree? I think a good training to go through, but actually carrying around a gun It seems like a recipe for getting into trouble.

When I was a doorman at a local bar in the early 90's some Bozo came in with a handheld tazer, unknown to all he passed. Well he got liquored up and started at people with it. Quickly enough he was escorted to the parking lot, somehow no one got the hit. He threatened one of the bigger guys working that night with it and ended up with a broken arm and piss wet pants. He fell on it after his arm was broken, and laid there until the police came.
As far as I've read, they are not legal to own or carry in Mass. After seeing what they are capable of I've wanted one.

Most people with CC's don't talk about or brag about as it might be used against you in the future.

I dunno; lots of people are not affected by them. I don't know anyone who's bulletproof. Tough call.

I agree; what would you do, send bullets flying after the fleeing suspect? Best bet is to keep the stuff close, and let your presence be the deterrent.

Cameras and Lojack are about the only real alternatives, IMHO. Carrying a weapon into a confrontation always leave the possibility of it being used on you, which is something you must consider in the when/where you carry category. Do you think you can retain your weapon if you get jumped by three of the thieves' buddies you didn't see while you're occupied with him?

I would be worried about wrestling around with a heroin addict..people get scared and when they feel like they are fighting for their life they go to extremes. I would hate to be bitten by a needle junkie. Hepatitis and HIV/AIDS comes to mind.

Did you have your boots on cus I would've commenced to sh!t stomping his @$$ if he was under a vehicle.

Just pull the pistol out and in your best Clint Eastwood voice say," Do you feel lucky punk? Well do ya?"

Seriously though carrying one is a big responsibility. Not to be taken lightly.

No it would not have deterred any robberies, but my worry with these things happening so often is I will happen upon one being committed while at my property or home and my life threatened or my family's. I have no intent to carry it all the time so it will be just a matter of calculated luck if I ever protect myself with it. Certainly not out of the question though.

Can't imagine anyone climbing a tree with one, almost seems comical. But try walking around in the area of my equipment late at night and you might understand. Last 4 or 5 years the area is heavily inundated with Section 8 housing and in effect the criminals have moved to the suburbs.

As far as someone taking the weapon away from a person like Treeco said, that is an obvious possibility but I have had quite a bit of martial arts training that might negate that happening. You just never know. Chances are no one will ever know I have a weapon on me unless they already have a weapon and are ready to use it on me.
