Climbing around Portland

RyanCafferky

Been here a while
I'm looking for other climbers around Portland Oregon who are interested in going out and climbing some really big trees. This weekend I was out in the Columbia Gorge climbing a Noble fir that is over 200' tall. I'll post pictures later. I'm pretty sure that in that same grove that there are douglas firs that are even taller.

It is an amazing setting, a four mile hike in waterfalls and streams the whole way, no people around, and huge trees everywhere.

Hit me up!

Here is a pic of my roommate who I convinced to go out with me. She got up to about 150' where I had the rope fixed and asked to go down. A few minutes after she got down the wind picked up so she missed out on really feeling the tree move.

That's pretty high for a first climb. If that was her first climb, she did well to get to 150'. Great tree! Too bad I'm on the east coast.

This past weekend we went out climbing up by Mt. Hood and took more newbies climbing. All of them made it to the top. From how much rope was left on the ground I figure the tie in point was 250 feet up. What is really fun about this latest place is that the tree is less than 100 feet away from the road. Doesn't get much more convenient than that.

just curious - I have brought people with no experience into trees before (not quite as high as this climb), and have wondered about liability. I have liability insurance for doing tree 'work', but don't think it includes climbing instruction and 'guiding'. I guess the individual (newbie) would rely on their own life insurance if something went wrong? Anyone have insight on this issue?

Great shots Ryan, looks like some beautiful trees there.
