Climbing a leaning stem without spikes...

Would somebody explain to a recreational noob what a "trunk walk" is? Thanks!

Just what it sounds like on a leaning tree, walk up the trunk on the upside of the lean. Can be done several different ways. The best way to get into the tree is still one of the first few responses, set a rope in the crown, do an open air ascent on the down side of the lean using your preferred rope technique.

Srt Steve i t would be great if you could post a pic of how you do this aboriginal technique with a strap I think this could be a great thing, I love the idea but can't quite envision how you are doing it, thanks

caleb I've seen 'em doing it in Zanzibar and they kindly taught me - theres two ways as far as I know - depends on the tree and your feet which is best.

See this - or many links "climbing coconut palm"

(And note the overindulgence on PPE)

we call it the huggy bear technique.... just remember a high tie in and lots of redirects if needed to be secure is you friend you can always use a throw knot and a pole pruner.... you can plan your tree climb better

I will dual crotch sometimes for stuff like that , even 2 srt lines and climb the rope , also us my lanyard to walk up the stem while using my climbing line from the other tie in point.
