Chippers and Tier 4 engines

Diesel used to be more reliable, cheaper fuel, and still have a higher average horse power. With the emissions requirements and fuel prices, the first to benefits are negated, somewhat. Diesel is more fuel efficient (excluding emissions) per hp than a gas engine. With fuel prices like they are and emissions requirements, the field is more level than before. Then factor in how much a T4F engine costs and gas starts looking more advantageous.

The biggest downside to gas for me is that I don't have a bulk fuel system for hauling gas. Diesel is easy in that regard.

The gas/diesel 730 runs the same, starting at ~$31k.

There are two 720s left for $23.5K. They are the same as the 730 with the exception of the discharge chute doesn't rotate, non reversing auto feed (730's reverses), and a manual vs electric control valve.

Not a chipper but we're going through this now with a vermeer 852 stumper purchase...they arent making them or the 1152 anymore...out of tier 3 motors...they have yet to re-design those models with tier 4 motors. This is the last 852 our dealer can get. Vermeer is sticking to 66 hp for a while. :tonto:

I have been waiting for over 3 weeks for a Bosch fuel rail sensor on a tier 3 Cummins 3.3. It is a $200 sensor that Cummins can not get because the fuel rail was outsource to a different manufacture who will only sell the complete fuel rail (over $700). I am shocked at how knowledge-less Cummins has been in this matter and entirely clueless on the concept of serving the customer rather than the vendor. It took them a week just to identify the part, another week to figure that it could only be had as a complete fuel rail and this last week to recognize that this is actually a problem that needs fixing.
This is the type of crap we are all facing when dealing with computerized engines. Yes there is a steep learning curve for everyone but that curve is going to cost us plenty. Given that I say buy non-ECM units every chance you get. You will not regret this as a basic business strategy.
You might want to consider this one:
