Chevy 3500HD 6.5 Turbo Diesel Dump Truck

I have several of these engines.
#1: Replace your fuel filter with 2 filters. Get spin on fuel filters. Put a 12 micron fuel water separator before the fuel pump on the frame and put a 2 micron in place of the one under the hood. Thank me 100,000 miles later.
#2: If it is 1993 or earlier it has no PMD for the injection pump. If 93 or later, move the PMD from under the hood to the grille or I bolted mine to the frame right in the air scoop in the bumper.
#3: Change the oil every 3000 on these trucks. No exceptions. I do mine at 2500 and use rotella 15-40. The 6.5 holds 8 quarts of oil, not much for these so it needs to be changed often.
#4: Look into a CS144 alternator upgrade. It is very easy and gives you a superior alt with 140 amps. The CS144 is an off the shelf alt. I got mine at napa.
#5: dieselplace.com use this for learning from the mistakes and successes of others.
#6: If the water pump goes out, replace it with the high output model. It has H.O. In the casting on its face. Get a low temp thermostat and fan clutch, 180F. You can get them at ssdieselsupply.
#7 PM me with any questions.

What kind of oil filter do you buy?

So here we go, the problems of owning a used vehicle. So this morning went to start the truck as usual, the glow plug light come on and i waited to turn off and turn the truck but it wouldn't turn, it'll turn over strong but wouldn't turn, and i tried this about 5 times with no luck, but then i noticed my glow plug light was no longer coming on, left the truck came back a few hours later and the light still not coming on, the truck turns over but won't start. Do any of you guys ever experience this or know what could cause this?

First, put a trickle charger on it to make sure you always have a full charge when cranking.

Second, plug in the block heater to help. The glow plug relay is temp controlled and if the truck is warm they don't come on as long. I usually would cycle them twice, now I just have a toggle switch.

Third, don't use ether or starting fluid. It can detonate on the glow plugs and damage the engine.

Since this truck does have an engine computer, unhook the positive from both batteries for a few hours. Let the batteries charge at the same time. If the computer is having a bad day this should help.

If the engine will crank but not start it is most likely fuel. Check to see if you get fuel at the fuel filter by opening the bleeder at the top, have someone crank the truck and see if fuel squirts out. If it bubbles then bleed the system and crank again. Try this before unhooking the batteries.

One common problem with poor performance and starting is a plugged filter sock in the fuel tank. You can disconnect the fuel line at the fuel pump inlet, on the frame, and blow compressed air in the tank. Open the filler cap first. This will remove the sediment/slime from the filter sock.

Lastly, always try things one a a time or you won't know what fixed it.
