Changing Icons

I used to use Mac/Apple's a bit when I was in college. I remember that there was an option to change icons on the desktop and in folders. You could at least change a color of the outline of the icon. I regular word document icon is usually white/blue, but you could change it to outline the white/blue with red, so often used icons would stand out when you're looking at a whole bunch of icons in a folder.

I have been trying to do the same with (glen, don't read further) Windows XP. I can't figure it out. Is it possible?

Right click on the file or folder. Go to properties. Somewhere in the properties there is usually a button called "Change Icon". It's a little different depending on what kind of file or folder it is.

Some of the other effects you may be looking for can be found by just right clicking on the desktop and selecting properties. There's a bunch of options in there.

They don't want you to be in control of your own computer! If you think it's bad now, wait 'til they implement DRM into the hardware.

In this case it may be that the icon is embedded in either the document itself, or in the application to which it's associated.

I have a very drastic solution in mind...

If you're running x86 hardware (or at least not Apple) go to http://www.knoppix.com and download an appropriate CDROM image, then burn and boot it for a taste (one of very many) of good computing. KDE has enough options to paralyze you if you're into the "desktop environment" sort of thing. Personally, I eschew it.
