Champion Tree Registry

A few weeks ago, I was browsing online for the Oregon Big Tree Registry and noticed it got transferred to Ascending the Giants, rather than the Oregon Department of Forestry.

Oregon Big Tree Registry Page

And here is the American Forests National Big Tree Registry page:

I'm looking forward to when the list of Oregon species online becomes somewhat complete.

The Oregon Department of Forestry probably should have left their pages online longer.

Does Canada have a Big Tree Registry?

Mario,

I'll be the first to admit, our list is woefully incomplete. At present, it only lists a fraction of the trees we have personally remeasured in the past few years. It'll be April before we're able to get the rest up. That said, the Oregon Department of Forestry list had some serious shortcomings as well which were harder to spot. Its been well over a decade since ODF put any time or money into maintaining that site, and it showed. One of our priorities is to not have a ton of listings that are inaccurate or reflect trees that no longer longer exist. We don't want to send folks on wild goose chases.
If you remember a few years back when the National Center for Conservation and Science Policy (NCCSP) was running the registry, the list on their site looked a lot different from the ODF list, for the same reason.

BTW, Canada doesn't have a national registry, but BC has one: http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/bigtrees/docs/BigTreeRegistry.pdf

Best,
Will

Cool ...

Thanks for the B.C. list.

That province should have some very similar climates to what we have in some parts of it.

I was born in Vancouver in 1959, but have lived in Oregon since 1963. Very much like both areas.

Ontario has an "Honour Roll":
http://www.oforest.ca/honour_roll/

It has changed hands a few times over the years, I don't really know if it is being kept up anymore.

A number of Ontario cities keep thier own "big tree" lists. I'm not sure if they are allied with HROT, or even what kind of quality assurance there is. Burlington, Ontario for example has several ID screw-ups in thier list, but if I recall it's sponsored by Davey or somebody...

The BC list was once very good, but it's been stagnant for the last 5 or so years. I'm not sure why nobody has taken up the cause, I emailed Andy MacKinnon who takes care of it over a year ago asking if anything was being done to update it and if I could help in any way, he was positive about it but I suspect it's a side project that he doesn't have the time for.
