Chain saw lanyard attachment

I just saw a bit about this in another thread, some folks preferring the side attachment point, some the rear center. Having just switched over to a bridge style saddle last year (previously used the old 4 D ring type), I was wondering what people's thoughts are on attaching the saw to the same ring as the 'biner, to make it 'weightless.' With my old system, I often clipped the saw in there to remove the weight from my line. Obviously not good for ascending, but I'm wondering if there are safety issues or other drawbacks other than the saw being closer to your rope.

yes that was me I always hooked mine on the right side d ring. now switching to the treemotion with rear center ring for the saw. I was going to start a new thread but you beat me to the punch. im curious to see what the people comments are

I put a 24"-26" chain saw rope on the saw and attach it to the D rings that my climbing rope is in making it "weightless". The 2' chain saw rope keeps the saw below me out of my way. I never have the weight of the saw hanging on my waist, that just sucks.

is it difficult to reach rear center? just curious could you maybe post a picture i want to see if I could set something up similar to try it out

I feel like one has to be a contortionist to reach the rear center. I like mine on the left, opposite my handsaw/lanyard side. I never thought about using the D-rings for my saw. I am still considering going back to the caritools. I broke three of them but maybe thats because I climb like a spaz. They just seem to catch on every little twig.

That was my question, BrushBandit... I used to clip it to my D ring before I switched to the new saddle... Is it still acceptable/safe with a bridge style saddle? I have been occasionally clipping it to my carabiner that is my main connection, and not the floating ring on the bridge. Seems like a no brainer for keeping the weight off when not ascending, but I'd like to hear other input for my own edification. Thanks for the reply!

What they mean is hanging the saw off your front d (the same one you tie in with) so the weight of the saw is held by your climbing line from above.

I don't see much difference. If you're doing it right, the rope should be carrying you, your saddle, and whatever is hanging off it, wherever it is attached (I use center back, FWIW). I wouldn't want any extra stuff clipped in front of me--I like to be able to clearly see my termination and my hitch. Occasionally I use a double tie-in, making it more important to me that there's nothing extraneous there.

Is it safe to do what you describe? I am not an expert, but I don't see why not.
