Cellular Internet

My landlord stopped the Wi-Fi network so I have to get my own.

There are three options, that I see. Cable, DSL or cellular internet. Are there others?

My cell is with Sprint so I talked to them already. The receiver costs $50 and then $60/month unlimited useage. There are other providers too that I'll check out. Does anyone have success/failure stories about this type of Internet service?

One article that I read suggested that the service can be a bit slow and sometimes sporadic. The writer didn't suggest relying on cellular Internet as the primary connection.

I have a Mac laptop and PC desktop...now, don't turn this into a Husky/Stihl or Mac/PC war :)

Tom,

you need to look at the product that Verizon has.... it is a USB cellular modem. if you get this insted of a net card, you can easily switch back and forth from laptop to pc. I have Verizon and have no complaints, it seams to be very fast and i never run into connection problems.

If you have a telephone then I would say go with ADSL.

Over here new ADSL lines can run at 20mbps+

You can then have a modem/router in one, wireless if you like.

These services are usually cheaper than others as they're easily connected providing you don't live out whoop whoop.

$60 a month USA sounds like a rip off to me.

Thanks for the insights.

Here are my priorities, in order:

Dependability...does the signal stay 'hot' or drop off if I'm stationary
Availability...can I get a signal where ever I need to connect.
Speed...compared to cable/landline dsl
Cost

Since I do travel a bit it's nice to have access anytime. I've stayed at high falootin' hotels and had to pay $10 per day for access in my room. Then, go to a Motel Cheapo on the freeway and had free Internet. There is always a wifi in airports but it costs. At the end of the month, what will work the best and be a good value?

Ive never had it drop a signal if i did not move.... and it is fast enough to BUZZ with, also i can watch any videos that i want, and i just downloaded a 800+ mb file in about 10 min.(windows office 2007... I had the BETA version, and it expired)
might have been even less than 10 minutes.....

you can look at coverage areas on their websites, and i know that in your section of town(close to the best pizza joint around) you will not ever have a problem.

it is more expensive, but you put that as your last prioity....

With wireless modems poping up everywheres the notbook cards are almost capable anywheres too.
I was at a clients house the other day in the middle of gawds country and still had internet capability do to the her modem inside and the verision card..
The other thing that i saw was a special on hackers on the Disc. channel that to;ld about how easy it was now for hackers with cards and notebooks to bounce internet to be able to travel and hack atthe same time. they use your feed to hook up and do their dirty work.
