cell phone remedy

I just wanted to share an idea I had for a Tailgate safety meeting. I wanted to address using cell phones while driving and on the job. I had these bumper stickers made up for the trucks and had the guys put them on when the meeting was over. I hope it helps us remember that as Kristian Shultz or "Whizz" says, "it's not about you, MAN!!" The guys on our team really seemed to like it. Some even asked for one for their personal vehicles. If you think it will help, feel free to use it. Stay safe!

Very nice, I'm big on hands free phone(bluetooth, earbuds) use since its almost impossible to get away from these crazy little devices.

A couple weeks ago I was doing a removal for a friend and was rigging out a big water oak. The guy's employee was running the lowering lines and I caught him several times talking on his phone. The third time I told him to either hang up or I would come down and take it from him and for him to pay attention to the work at hand. I looked at my friend then and he mouthed "Thank you" up to me. Many years ago, an arborist in the Philly area was on an Ash spar and was taking 8-10 foot pieces that he had taglined off. His groundie was new and had stepped under the boughs of a hemlock to light a cigarette and lost concentration for a moment. End result was a shattered hip socket,femur,Tib/Fib fracture to right leg and ankle, tib fracture to left leg. The guy had rods from foot to hip on right and from foot to mid thigh on left. All because of inattentiveness.

Nice little sticker there, Ben. Thanks for making me relive the entire TCI week in my mind! "It's not about you, MAN!" Love it!

So, you think there may be a chance someone will get busted before the policy really sinks in?

OOM, I'm with you. In-attentiveness drives me up the wall, though I've been quite lucky with most of the people I've worked with...especially lately.

Yeah, I'd say someone will get busted. I have no illusions of this being the end. I just made a policy that we wouldnt use them at all while driving; not that they cant have them. You can only fit so much on a bumper sticker. Also like OOM mentioned, we talked about use on the jobsite and decided that we deserve eachothers attention. Its a start and better than a threat.

Besides the obvious danger, there are big fines. A traffic cop told me that New York instituted new laws for commercial vehicle drivers on cell phones. The fine is 11,000 dollars for the company and 2,500 for the driver. ouch

Good policy.

Good publicity!

Yup Guy, That part doesn't hurt either.

From what I understand Thill, those fines are the nationwide MINIMUM! States MUST adopt a plan that includes these fines at least.

Thanks guys.

I was hit in my car yesterday because I was not concentrating on the road,
I spoke in Mobile, I used my Jaba earbud, but ran out in front of another car.
fortunately there were no injuries, only damage to my car and the counterparty car.
It was fortunately in town where you may only drive 50 km per hour.
so I was lucky this time so No more driving and talking on the mobile at the same time,
there is not a conversation that is so important that you can not pull off the road and talk or wait until you get to the next stop.
Drive safe.
