I have mixed feelings about this tree so please feel free to comment. This tree is right around the corner from my house and is the thickest cottonwood I have seen is Boise.

Would have liked to have seen the canopy before but pretty cool.

Perhaps a big bed around it would help lengthen the lifespan.

Bunch of vines recently cut off if it?

I was chatting with the guy about expanding the mulch bed but has not sure, likes his grass. Wish I could have seen it before they pruned it as well. The company who did it has quite a bad reputation for being a hack so I'm sure they took off WAY more than necessary.

Yes on the vines. The ivy was taking over quite well. Hopefully later in the winter Ill be able to go take the ivy off that he couldn't reach

I wish more people would evaluate tree risk more rationally. In most cases they have a higher chance of being killed in a car wreck than the tree over their house killing them.

Agree it would be nice to see it before it was pruned, but from what I can see, it doesn't look like it was butchered. If it was my house and I wanted to save the tree, I would insist on a judicious weight/leverage reduction. That looks like what was done. Again, not seeing it before it's hard to tell, but it looks like a significant amount of canopy was removed while retaining a lot of natural shape and possibly the natural height. In my experience sometimes these compromises have to be made when dealing with trees of this size next to a house. Physics/safety versus optimum beauty.

Cool tree and vid.

It would also be nice to see this in the late summer months.. IS it going to sucker like hell? keep your eyes on it for a few years.

Large cuts on an old poor compartmentalizer... although a true tough survivor in this case so seeing it in the growing season would be cool @TreeVB.
Follow up pics please!

As long as I am in my area I will keep up with this tree. Ill go take some photos when it leafs out in spring and again at the end of summer.
