Catching the Hacks in Action, Picture posting:

Okay here we go, arborists and stewards of trees, lets make a difference.

The wrong practice of topping trees continues, many years after it has been proven to be harmful to trees.

What makes a person or company follow rules of proper trimming?

-education? knowing what is right from wrong.
- good morals. Not wanting to cause grief to a tree owner.
- fear of being fined or loosing business.

Well, we can educate and spread the word, sure. I think the arborist world has been doing a good job of it in the past 15 years.

Now, fear; fear of being fined or loosing some business. That is probably the most powerful.

Here is something we can start here, but I can only do it with help.

Send me your photographs of companies and people for hire, topping trees. I need to see some proof, like a company name or some good details.

If what you say seems true, after I research, I will post the picture on this thread.

Along with the company's information and approximate date, at least the year.

Now, I will NOT tell or give any hint as to who the person is that had supplied the picture.

If I feel that you are just trying to trash competition, i will not pass on the picture or the information. It has to be topping or some other terrible tree work and not just a picture of a topped tree and you claiming that "so and so" did it.

Hey, you guys can also scan advertisements that you find that promote topping and we can discuss them too. E-mail them to me too, and I'll post them too. There are some really bad ones around the country.

Or, forward news stories or fines relating to the same thing.

Here's how this will work:
--------------------

I get a picture in my e-mail and some information =the more info on the company the better.

I review it and research.

I post the picture or pictures here on this posting.

And in the text, I put in something like this:
------------------------------------------

Here is a picture of tree company, XYZ TREE SERVICE, allegedly topping a large white oak tree in June 2009.

as you can see, the tree is being topped; which is an unacceptable trimming practice.

you can also see, a climber in the tree and no hard-hats, ear protection or eye protection on the crew.

their contact is:
1234 sea breeze court
manassas, VA 34442

they are in Toppy County in Virginia.

phone 123 456-7899
----------------------------
Now here is the beauty of search programs.

If someone is looking for a tree service for hire and types in the key words: tree trimming, Manassas Virginia.

or if they are looking for the company by name and type in XYZ Tree Service. Or any other key words I had written above........

then within the google search results will be a link to this very Tree buzz post. Since it has many of the key words the person was looking for, they will likely click on it, then they will get to see what kind of work this company really does and they might just learn that topping is wrong too.

If this becomes a big enough thing. We might make a difference.
--------------------------
now please help by sending me those photos and stories and info.

This way, you aren't the "bad guy".

It will just be me and I speak for the trees.

Send the pictures and stories To: NoTopLorax@yahoo.com

What a completely negative concept. I would be very surprised to find Mark or Tom supporting the idea of hanging out everyone's dirty laundry on what is supposed to be a forum for good arborists to learn and voice their opinions about this great industry. I guess I'll soon find out if I'm wrong.

By the way, in about 3 hours, I could have a perfectly photoshopped photo of all my competitors topping trees. Good luck with verifying authenticity, and the ensuing lawsuit. You can't save the world on treebuzz, all you can do is reach out a hand to these guys instead of a knife, and you can win small battles on a regular basis. I have helped educate at least a dozen of my competitors by volunteering to teach at classes sponsored by the Missouri Dept. of Conservation, to help the guys pass their arborist exam. They have changed. Give it a try.

I laughed at the Lorax, "You poor stupid guy!

You never can tell what some people will buy"

It's a line from 'The Lorax' by Dr Seuss.

Nice quote Treeco.

Oh, thanks for explaining that. I haven't seen that book since i was a kid. I loved that one.

We have several Dr. Suess books for our 2 year old, but not that. That's terrible, every tree guy's kid should have that one. I'll have to order one.

Ghilli, another new guy huh?

Welcome to tree buzz!

Are you a forest creature too?

they are coming out of the wood-work...

Thanks for the welcome.

Forest creature? To what do you refer? My general appearance?

Tom's posting on another board brought me here, can't speak for the others.

I've got a lot of reading to do...So much info so little time!

Be safe.

Yes? What am I looking for?

BTW, as far as calling out "hacks" in open forum. I think it is a bad idea. Too many people live in glass houses and do not realize it.

My two cents to stay on topic.

EDIT:

I see you don't have to "quote" someone to reference what you are replying to....Nice!
