Can someone help me ID this?

I have two of these trees on my property in southern Michigan. Both about 30 feet tall. Late fall both of them lost ALL of their needles. I thought they had died. However this spring they have buds all over them can somebody please help tell me what kind of pine tree this is?

Larch. Also known as tamarack. A deciduous conifer. "There are two types of hunting, ordinary hunting and ruffed grouse hunting. There are two places to hunt ruffed grouse, ordinary places and Adams county. There are two times to hunt Adams county, ordinary times and when the tamaracks are smoky gold." Aldo Leopold.

Yeah it's easy to get worried when a conifer loses its foliage. I've been called on a number of occasions when someone thought their bald cypress was dying :) It's kind of mistakingly engrained in our heads that all conifers are evergreen.

Based on the cone size that appears to be a European larch (Larix decidua). The Tamarack (Larix laricina) looks very similar but with much smaller cones.

The problem with common names in cases like this is two people can be referring to different trees using the same common name because there are so many damn common names.
