Cambium Saver

I've heard alot of talk about FS, RG and all that and they are great tools no doubt about it. But one under rated piece of equipment is Sherill's leather cambium saver. It doesn't have a load rating cause the rope goes thgough it and around the limb but still makes the climb way smother than just around a branch. There are no pulleys or rings so you will have a broader bend radius which I know some people like compared to the FS sharp bend over the rings. All the retrieval problems I hear about there is none of that you put in a knot and pull you can't hurt it. The only thing I did was rub it with a good coat of dubin so the leather doesn't stiffen up after it gets wet. I have never had the chance to use a RG but I have an AFS with my 150' lava line always, but for ease I grab my 120' blue streak with cambium saver more often. So I'm not trying to knock any FS or RG at all but is the cambium saver a very wide used tool by many people or why not? I just never hear about it. I know some of you guys climb wider trees than me so I don't know if they come longer but they might. I'd love to hear anything anybody has on this.

Rope Sleeve

Let me offer up my humble rope sleeve made from flexible metal conduit.

Originally the only conduit was the heavy grey colored that wore well; then robotics needed conduit that was more supple and so the black vinyl coated material was perfect. Granted you can over use anything and shorten its life but for almost zero friction they are hard to beat. I do take care to only use the lock-joint spiral metal sleeve that last longer.

I can make them to any length and will fit on ½” arborist rope or 7/16” hybrid ropes.

New Tribe is now putting them on a motion lanyard that is quite nice.

As to retrieval- if in doubt about successful removal I suggest the practice of using your throwline to lower your rope once you have popped over the rope sleeve.

Just a reminder that when climbing in sappy trees the rope sleeve aids in keeping your rope cleaner

Re: Rope Sleeve

I like 'em. Easy to set and easy to remove from the ground. They are harder to set and retrieve on a tight crotch so I like using a ringed cambium saver in those situations. I do have to agree that you can't beat the AFS on a removal.
