CAA TCC Winners

Thanks for weighing in on that, Kathy. I first saw you climb in Pittsburgh I think. Always a pleasure to see women climbing and competing.

As a local arborist association, the CAA still strives to put on the best TCC possible, and it would be our great honor to have several women competitors next year. Warren Wilson College has a couple of female climbers, and I spoke with them at the Southern Chapter and they said they would be down for our TCC.

The date is April 18, 2008, and the competition is open to anyone. ANYONE who wants to have fun and win lots of prizes.

What can TCC's do to entice more female competitors show up? I noticed the NEC TCC had at least 3 last year, and there was 1 at ISA Southern. I think we may be missing the boat somehow. I would love to see women competing n TN.

Honestly, here's what I think you should do: Have prizes that are identical to what the male winners get. If no one comes, then no one get's the prize. If ONE lady shows up, and can do each event, then she get's all the prizes she earned. If you have a prize for each event, then she get's ALL the 1st place prizes AND she get's the Master's Challenge awards, too. She earned them. Then it's just word of mouth. If people could see you can earn stuff almost by just showing up, they will come.

I don't know how people have been setting things up in the past. I've only partaken in one comp and have never helped set one up.

since the itcc has set the tone for us by having two divisions (men and women), i think the local chapters should follow that lead. i know it's hard to come up with twice the booty, and i don't have an easy solution for that, but i strongly believe that equivalent prizes should be available to both divisions. seems like a no-brainer to me. the fact that at this point in time the women's division is sometimes only one person makes this less obvious to people, but it's really completely irrelevant. fair is fair. eventually the number of female competitors will rise, and the equitable format will be already in place to accomodate it.

that said, i don't know about other competition climbers, but for my part the prizes are not my motivation. i compete because i'm competitive, and because i would like the industry to be less male dominated. i have been the only woman at chapter comps, who took home nothing even though i placed in the top third of the competitors as the only woman. i have also been one of several women competitors who won every event and took home a sweatshirt from a local parks department because that was the only prize they'd bothered to get for me. free stuff is always great, but what pissed me off about the comp where i got nothing wasn't the fact that i got nothing. it was the fact that the rest of the winners were recognized and i was not. i would have been totally pleased if we'd all just gotten medals.

ok...stepping down once again off my soapbox. thanks for your indulgence.

I agree with you, Nick and Kathy.

I wouldn't like to see a competitor's main motivation be to get prizes, but I do think it would be unfair to have less prizes (or just a sweatshirt) for women competitors.

Getting prizes is the easy part. That's what the phone was invented for....begging suppliers and manufacturers for the goods.

Like I said earlier, I hope to have a robust field of men and women next year in Charlotte.

April 18, 2008 in case anyone forgot.

good times.

You go girl. You hit the nail on the head. Chapters coming up with twice the $ is the only factor, in my opinion. If you placed third in a male division comp, you shouda received the prizes. That sucks.
You certainly have the right attitude and spirit. Any chance you can compete in IL on August 25th? Having your presence there would get the other women just as motivated as you are. See ya in Honolulu. Let's have dinner there.??

Yo! Easy, hook me up!

hey norm,
thanks for the vote of confidence. i don't mean to badmouth my chapter. there are a lot of people who work really hard to put on a great TCC. and there are some adjustments that need to be made.

It takes an effort of the Chapters and of women arborists out there to level out the playing field of our comps.

Though I'm not as accomplished as Kath, I have been climbing in comps for over 5 years. It takes a real commitment to compete and a strong belief to help comp organizers realize that the ‘even steven’ philosophy works! Creating an equal distribution of prizes will entice more climbers... period. If the booty isn't fair, it just reinforces the general feeling of inequality even if not intentionally done.

I consistently ask women in the Northeast to compete. I know we'll have minimally 3 this year. Yet I know of 4 others who are interested... I'll keep after them in hopes to have them out in ‘08!

Maybe we should start a Chapter competition as a goal increase women arborists participation? Hmmm...just an idea.

Holding an “Intro to Competition Workshop” is another great way for Chapters to introduce newbie climbers! (Hint-hint out there Chapters.)

Ok... off my soap box.
