Been here much more than a while

A client had asked me to "pronounce" their Shagbark hickory was actually dead earlier this summer before they hired somebody to remove it (didn't want to remove it if it was going to live). About 18" dbh tree that had grown up in the woods...so +/- 80' without measuring. It still had a little green sucker sprout so I said I couldn't quite sign a death certificate, but for all practical purposes...yes, it was dead.

This is a 2-3 year old house...any guesses as to cause of death.

Was back on property today for other work. Took this pic...does that make it easier to guess?

Not sure how much removal was, but probably in the $1K range with limited access. Would have been in the $1C range if they removed it before packing clay over the entire root system. Sure, hardly noticable in the budget of a million dollar house, but very irresponsible none the less.

Hickories really don't like having their toes tramped on at all, especially those that have grown naturally in a forest environment. Gotta love developers! Some fine day when all is right with the world, developers and their clients will seek the advice of arborists before they inflict their damage on innocent trees. There are times when I would like to eviscerate developers with a dull rusty axe to give them a taste of their own. I'll step off the soapbox now.

I like the term "Effectively removed" for situations where the tree is a goner, but not quite gone yet. It saves me from having to impersonate Miracle Max from The Princess Bride
