The cities lack of critical area enforcement and hacked on trees certainly contributes to it. Over the years I've been all over this bluff, but gladly nothing in the past 5 years or more.
I just got word, that another local company got tasked with removing the tree just down from the top edge.
They must have had a TIP in the big tree right on the edge.
Word is they brushed out the leaner on the way up, and bombed sections down the bluff (obvious from crawling over it today)..
On the butt cut word is there was a BIG boom that rattled windows, and the ground started shifting

Climber ASCENDED up to the grass above, disconnected and everything let go!

My friend who told me about this, found the guys hitch (tied to a 1/2 double braid rigging line !?). Axe which rode the stump down about half way, and a webbing sling!

Home owner came out, and crew said they had to get to another job, packed up and left.

Note the dead ivy on the trunks. The whole bluff is owned by the HOA, and the leaves make it look as if someone’s been down there in the past year..

Increase setbacks for houses and clearing, homeowners and realtors don’t want to hear it but the issues are obvious. We have 75’ setback from the ocean high tide mark to the edge of the house, but one cannot make large openings within 75’ if it’s straight woods. So if a house is placed at 75’ one can clear ample space around the house and then remove “hazard” trees that may damage property, and if the trees on the bank fall over post cutting it is what it is. Ummm that’s dumb.

Ha! Around here realtors would tell their new sells, that they just need to call a certified arborist to write a letter declaring their neighbors tree on the bluff is hazardous, and then they can get a mountain/water view. Seriously I would get at least one of these per month!

We have 200’ from high tide (state law), bald eagle stuff (nest about 75’ away aka 300' during nesting season and 100' from perch trees). And 50’ county law from steep slopes.
County and city specifically states no topping. Crooked arborists argue ‘yeah but retopping is ok’ or call it ‘pollarding’, then there always is the ‘hazard’ “if this tree goes it will pull if a section of dirt on the bluff”

Doesn’t help that a local big wig university geology professor who works as a private geotechnical engineer, states that when trees move in the wind, it tugs the roots destabilizing the slope (the realtors love him, and that’s the bulk of his work).
