Buckingham Butterfly

I had a feeling this was gonna happen! the battle of the legg harnesses has started. Buckingham copyed the KOMET butterfly and named it the ROLLER. It looks really nice I can't wait to try one!

It's in the new Sherrill flyer and on their web site.

I just got the price from one of my suppliers in Canadian dollars=$390.00. I guess that I am not getting one anytime soon. Profit is fine but this is crazy!

I have had saddles last for 5-6 years no prob. However I have found that the buckingham products have not lasted nearly as long for me. I bought a Masters saddle when they first came out and it only lasted 2 years before all the stitching fell apart. My current saddle is a Petzl and it is standing up real well. I was looking into the Glide for one of my staff and $400.00Can is way too much for a saddle that as of yet does not meet CSA standards. A friend of mine just got a glide and loves it but it did not cost him anything.

Last I checked, no. I wanted to make my own friction saver last summer. I was going to use those same rings, but I wanted to put my own rope on it. I called many suppliers and they only stocked the friction saver with the rings (all were glad to sell me one so I could cut the rings off). I also called Buckingham. I was told that those rings are not available to the general public. They are "owned" by Buckingham and they don't want other people making gear out of them.

So if you do find someone who is selling them, let me know!

Hi Kevin,

from what I see on that page , the ID is to big my liking. But thanks for the site. I have looked at many sites for those rings and came up with nothing like the Buckinham rings. Only Karl Kuemmerling Inc sells a ring that that I found works , but still still 3/8 and not 1/2".

I have found a supplier for these rings. However they are not hard anodized. Viola from New Tribe has noticed that the regular alum. rings will wear grooves (when used in a F.C.). Last I checked they (new tribe) were still looking for a supplier but they may have found one by now. Might want to check w/ them

Thanks for posting the link, Nick. Unfortunately, you can't link to a search URL (if you click on your link, it will pull up every product we sell). To see the Glide listings, just go to our site and type glide into the search field.

Re: Buckingham \'GLIDE\'

Just checked out this glide saddle on Sherrills web site.
This thing seems great. I am sick of having to modify everything and this saddle seems to require none.

In the pictures the bridge is offered in different lengths.

1. How do you attach it with both ends girth hitched around the rings? In other words can you replace it without buying the back set-up, upper rings, lower rings etc.? AND still have it girth hitched? confused on this point.

2. The saddle has suspenders you can buy. Can these suspenders be used as a chest ascender? Not as a primary suspension point but able to attach a chest ascender?

Yes, you can purchase and attach different size suspension straps (although it's not adjustable). You have to disassemble the lower portion (rings from legstraps and belt) to attach new suspension strap. Buckingham intends to supply the saddles (standard) with a flat spectra strap that does not include pulley. CMI is developing a new pulley specifically for this product (ready in 6 weeks).

I've not tried, will forward question to designer. The front of the suspender has limited elasticity for comfort. Elastic portion "bottoms out" (for lack of better term) to provide 100% fall protection support. So probably, you could attach chest ascender. Will get back. (Please feel free to remind me if you don't receive an answer by TCI)

Re: Buckingham \'GLIDE\'

Greg;

Sherrill sells FS rings, although they are not exactly like the ones in the photo of the Glide. The small ring is in stock (they use it for the FS Prusik), but you may have to wait for the bigger one.

Re: Buckingham \'GLIDE\'

Well my Glide is on the way. My supplier is giving me a bit of a break on it so I can try it. Good thing that the Canadian dollar is doing well, if it tanks again the glide will be worth $450.00 Can. Should be here next week. I will keep you posted.

Re: Buckingham \'GLIDE\'

My glide came in today.............gonna try her tomorrow. I will keep you all posted. Anyone else have one?

Re: Buckingham \'GLIDE\'

glide vrs. lighter saddles

I picked up a couple of glides at TCIA so I could try it out myself and let my helpers try it out as well.
the buckingham Glide IS a heavier saddle.
When you compare it to my Butterfly or my Austrian Duo it is bulky.
BUT
I think the lighter saddles have a place for pruning, lighter work, competing. When I am swinging around a 046 (460 now) or bigger saw the lighter saddles dont support the weight as well. The back support will flex or the saddle will "walk" around my waist until the front is to the side.
the new Glide is stiffer, but seems to be along the same lines as the butterfly in it's design with a major difference: All the pieces are removable. so you could put different, softer leg straps from say your Butterfly on should you wish.
One note: Sherrills has the Glide put together wrong, In my opinion.
the leg strap buckels should be at the outside of the leg, NOT the inside where all my most important stuff could get pinched. I talked to the guy who made the Glide from Buckingham and he agreed about the buckle placement.
In addition, the side "D" rings can be made to lock back and forth by threading the bridge strap through the second bar of the "D". Just like the Butterflys.
There was some talk about the buckles on the Glide releasing, (this was from a different saddle maker) so I carried the Glide over to him and we compared the two saddles and worked the buckels. No difference at all between the two.
the only real difference in the buckle design I dont like is the size of the Glide buckles is so much bigger than the Butterflys.
I have been climbing with the Glide now for a few days and like it alot.
Oh and the pulley seems a little silly, maybe the upgraded pulley from CMI will be better dont know
