big ash leaning heavily towards wires

that was interesting, thanks.

would make me want to make a false axe out of a plastic wedge and handle though.

If we were talking about other things in that vid, don't like too much that he crossed over directly behind the tree on his escape route, late.

Agreed!!! Good point, David! A 45° escape route would have been much better. And, from the camera's angle, it looks like it would have been easy. He certainly knows that. Kinda makes you wonder why he did that, doesn't it?

I prefer a 'felling lever' in the kerf on those rare occasions when a telltale is needed. Anyway, if you do "make a false axe out of a plastic wedge and handle", would you post some pix?

Yes, I thought about that very technique while posting, I've never tried it but it is interesting.

I think Norm makes a good point.. If I had to do this over again, I would look more at the cut than the top. The top started moving and I called for the pull early, before the cut was finished. That is why I stopped and then had to go back and finish the cut. Even then the hinge was mighty thick on the tension side. That never would have happened if I had been looking at the cut. I usually look at both, but in reviewing the video it is clear that I was only looking up.

I think I must have been looking up to make sure the tree didn't move to the lean.. That was unnecessary as it was clear the retainer lines were doing their job very well.. Its a good lesson, which is most clear. That is one of the things I love about video.. Thanks Norm for pointing that out!

Check out this Hotsaws101 Video. Notice how at 1:20 he puts his axe in the kerf and how he watches the handle. The handle starts to lower at 2:45 when the kerf starts to open a little. It can be a helpful trick to know, sometimes.

very good thanks, had never seen that before.

watch how the father pulls the son away from the saw in this vid at 1.15, I bet the father reflected on that day when he got home saying to his wife, 'think we'll wait a few more years before I take the boy logging again'
