BID THAT TREE !

80’-90’ tall. I’d give them a price for full removal or the option to deal with the wood themselves. It’s Monterey pine, so the limbs are quite heavy. No crane available in our area.
Right so you would need to piece out the limbs to the main spar, that will take a few hours, hang the tops... assuming you can get a 55’ bucket truck close that leaves a couple pretty heavy tops to pull. May be able to just fly the tops while in the bucket? Felling and bucking another couple hours, clean up ... couple more hours? Hauling and dump fees? So far I see minimum a full day.
However, 40” butt logs are no joke! And pine generally sucks because the branches are grabby octopines! For that reason I put a bit more time on pines. The branch material is deceivingly heavy too. You have a mini so the trunk should be relatively easy to deal with, the weight however will not! And will likely require a few trips depending on the truck used.

That's the beautiful thing about having our own crane don't need to call anybody and you rnt under the gun

Too much side lean in my opinion to chance falling the spar until at least halfway down
In my experience, pines have quite tenacious holding wood and proper compensation should be able to lay them down the center of the lot, however pictures don’t always show the whole story and you know what you are comfortable with. It reflects on time spent in the bucket truck vs just running saws, that’s all.

By the way, aren’t Monterey Pines protected? They are known only to exist in a fairly restricted range? We have lodgepole, Ponderosa or bull pine.. and White pine predominantly. Of the pines we have only the Ponderosa will display similar growth patterns as the Monterey Pine. The others generally grow y’all and straight. But all of them suck ass hand bombing branches behind!

I’m unhappy today, we got to the job site only to find a bin open on our bucket truck. A rope bucket tipped over, the 1/2” climbing line gone as well as a helmet! Oh well, that line was due to be replaced soon. The helmet was in great shape though :(

First time customer. There are quite a few large lower limbs going out the back over the fence and neighbors shop. They already had one like these two removed previously and the company was supposed to come back and get these. My guesses was that whom ever did the first one realized he underbid the job.
I’ve definitely underbid some toads like these before and don’t want to relive that. I bid $5k

The mass of a tree goes way up once you pass the 30” mark I find. You’d be right to bid high on this job. Another thing to do is figure out a day rate for your outfit, you can then at least make margin and your intended daily profit. When a job that is too difficult to estimate accurately you can then suggest 2 prices to the client. Based on your previous experience with these trees your estimate would be not less than 2 days @ x per day. A guote would need to be more than this because you are betting that you can achieve the work by a certain time. When a gamble is made the payout should be higher. When a sure thing is in play there is no risk.

Funny I did a job today. No cleanup. My bid should’ve been pretty spot on or close to but there were some catches.

1st: Damn throw line got tangled and twisted in a bunch of bushes as I was trying to get it in a large oak that was full of suckers all the way so to get a good high tie in meant setting it low and then climbing to where I need to be. Ended up cutting the throw line because it was taking way too much time trying to untangle it. And I had it perfectly organized when we showed up to the job site! :muyenojado:

2nd: We removed some branches over a garage that were growing off a larger branch. I noticed the large branch had a split right at the trunk (was the beginnings of splitting) so I thought “I need to tell the customer about this afterwards.” Well the neighbor ends up coming out saying she wants the branches growing off that original larger branch (opposite side of the the ones I took off over garage; fence in the middle) taken off that are on her side over her fence. At this point what with the split and the neighbor it makes sense to take the whole thing.

3rd: Wasn’t something we were gonna do that same day. I wasn’t sure whether I could get at it climbing because it goes pretty far out right over the fence. We finished the work and I kept contemplating going back up to see if I could position a line on another leader and be able to get far enough out to do what I had to do. Kept contemplating it and knew I would end up being their longer than what I bid the job for but ended up going back up there just for the purpose of trying to see if I could get a line where I needed to be able to limb walk out.

My climbing line was already in the tree so it only made sense. But a job that should’ve taken maybe 2.5-3 hrs or so ended up turning into an almost all day thing because of stuff unrelated to the actual work we were there to do lol.

Oh well. Gotta love tree work. Just gotta move on.

We gave a range of 2000 dollars. The high side was pristine the low side maybe some collateral damage to understory. But yeah that helps to give 2 prices for sure.

The idea of using a site like this for the purpose of estimating, is that you and most everyone else on this site are not operating in my area. As a side note, if you are particularly skilled and meticulously safe/ do really clean work- you don’t need to advertise. We removed our adds from the local papers and we refused yellow pages because we can’t deal with the volume already. So much so that losing a job such as the one I mentioned is almost a blessing in disguise!

Too much call volume, every tree care owner’s dream right?

I would imagine it took years of building your business, advertising etc. to get to that point of being able to shut down the advertising and generate enough organic reach?

I mean for a newer company you have to build a reputation and have worked with enough clients to be able to get enough of those referrals, word of mouth, etc. When nobody knows who you are you have to put some money in to make more money.
