Bicycle arborist

Tonight I've been sorting through pictures and getting them filed so that I can make use of them.

When I was in Detroit for TCI Expo in '04 a local arbo showed up for the Day of Service with a bicycle!

Who woulda thunk it?

Is that bike trailer available commercially or did Bing build it himself?

Not wanting to sound stupid but living here in Barbados and only following the buzz for a few months I am assuming that this person is Kevin. Very cool stuff. Is the trailer aluminium? Minimalist to the max. Swing.

THAT trailer is sweet, I believe it's made in Iowa by a company called "Bikes At Work". The Bicycle tree service is not entirely new tho, we try to use no gas whenever the situation is appropriate - under 5 miles commute, light pruning, no haul, estimates/consults - we even get away with charging a little more for the "green" service even tho the overhead is lower, funny that.

I think this could be added to this discussion.

Wait a second! Is that helmet he's wearing approved as a bike helmet? Is it rated?

PS...Raven, your pic didn't load :(

That trailer is still at use except mainly for lawn mowing, scythe, and rototiller. That trailer has moved refrigerators, couches, office furniture. The dr chipper is no fun, but i do believe a GOOD lightweight portable chipper is very feasable. I always wanted to rig a chainsaw driven drive system. Bikes at work have upgraded their trailer design and it is even simpler and sweeter. I ulso use the shorter version. The other cart in the video is made from bent conduit, and strapped to seat post with cut tire. The bikes at work work trailer is worth spending on because of the engineering. I am working on shrinking my work radius again, that is the most important thing for a biking arborist. I let word of mouth travel too far. I hate traveling 15 miles to work and pass a tree company working in my neifhborhood who traveled 15 miles to get there

Here's the bike poser pic taken by a happy client with happy trees. I'm really glad Kevin's doing this too, it adds legitimacy and will encourage others to try it.

I love this thread. I have done this before as well, when all the material stays on site. I have yet to invest in a trailer. I'll have to take a look at that brand, or have my neighbor weld one up for me. People get really surprised when I show up for sales on my 29er.

A week ago, I asked Charlie at TCIA if they would even consider accrediting a company that is cycle powered. I have yet to hear back from him.

Haha when I saw the bike trailer on here a few weeks ago I thought "Damn, I remember seeing a picture a few years back of a dude with the same type of setup riding to a jobsite in Detroit."

I was pretty sure it was Bingham.

At different times, I also carried an historic church pew, a refrigerator, and stuff for a camping trip (sleeping bags, tent, two crated dogs, two folding chairs, guitar, etc.) on mine. The latter led a nice lady to ask if we were homeless... "Nope, but thanks for checking. Just living the dream..."
