Best "spikes" for Geckos

Best \"spikes\" for Geckos

Alright, this is a post Dad has asked me to put on here. He currently owns a pair of Geckos and loves them. The only thing is, he dislikes the spike part itself. (The part you drive into the tree) and with the new styles out, he wants to know what you guys like best. He was climbings with Kliens before the Geckos and he really likes the straight spike, as opposed to the slightly curved European ones. He says they slip out on him alot more then the straight ones do. Any input?? Thanks

Re: Best \"spikes\" for Geckos

Ranger,

I have the pole gaffs (straight) on my Geckos and they are sweet.

Can't remember how long, about 2 inch though.

I don't think I would like the "Euro" gaffs, seem like they would be a bit squirrly.

Re: Best \"spikes\" for Geckos

pole gaff only way to go, but i mostly climb on smooth bark Gums so it might differ for you depending on the type of trees you climb.

Re: Best \"spikes\" for Geckos

I have the euros and have no problem with them. The seem to be working well. They just take time to get used to from the regular spikes.

Re: Best \"spikes\" for Geckos

Euros are great on thick barked trees like sequia, Pinus etc, pole gaffs are best for general purpose. At the end of the day what´s best is up to each and every one and what one´s acustomed to.

tree spikes are too big.... you can see the markes after a good pruning job. I like using the smaller pole gaffs

Re: Best \"spikes\" for Geckos

The Euro's are a bit troublesome in the thick bark pine, fir and redwood, but very secure in thin bark, hard wood trees like madrone, Euc and Pepperwood. All native species to my area.

Great climbers, the CF G's

I saw you climbing skills in action Rob...I think you can leave them in the truck for pruning jobs.

Re: Best \"spikes\" for Geckos

A coulple of us from work were wondering which ones would be best for Ponderosa pines, a mojority of our take downs. Most currently run Kleins and a couple want to switch to Geckos but are unsure of the size of gaff to uses. Which one would be best for ponderosa pines? Also are the euro gaffs similar to the Klein gaffs as shown in the Sherrill magazine? I personaly do not own a set of gaffs yet as I do not do much climbing, only during training, but the crews are encouraging me to get out more in the field.
