Awesome Crane Article in TCI Mag!

Of course I realize the problem with averages. Half the people I know are below average!

I have always found it useful when estimating foliage to take the lenght of the branch and calculate based on its greatest diameter. For instance a 40' limb that is 20" in diameter at its greatest would be calculated as a log 40'x20". I am usually within a 200lb. No scientific, not fullproof, but a start.

LOL, Tony. Yeah, even though some people may be "below average", I have found them to be a valuable resource at times. Sometimes the cleverest guys don’t have much of an education, but have a world of experience and I try to listen to them (as I’m sure you do).

On the other hand, I have a college degree in engineering and sometimes it seems like MORE than half the engineers that I know are below average as well, at least in the common sense department.

Thanks for the tips on the foliage weights, I’ll have to give that some thought and see how it works out.

chris g, you were there and listening in when we were reaching for a couple picks. was i right on the money? why? because of the lmi. btw, chris, what were your exact words 2 picks in about us? fastest you ever seen, right?

Yes, I was there last Thursday morning and had a chance to watch their operation first hand. As I said before in one of my posts, I would like to gather as much info on the different types of slinging techniques that tree workers are using these days for a future TCI article. Everyone who I have spoken with have gladly offered to let me come watch and help out too, which I'm very thankful for.

oldirty and his crane op were right on with their estimates. Using the headsets and keeping in constant communication with each other are definitely the way to go. I still think hand signals have their place though. I know a great crane op who is hard of hearing and can only use hand signals.

As Fred has mentioned above, using an LMI can't hurt and as Tod says, you do develop a feel for weights after awhile.

oldirty and Dave work well together and are very fast and efficient. I especially like how they used the Gunnebo hooks just as we used with Mark and Mayers at the workshop last year. I wish that I could convince more people to try them out.

Old dirty might go the way of Hollen.

I hope not though. even though i hate him.

I don't get much of a chance to get on here in the busy season, but when i do, lately most of it seems like either a bunch of young kids on here, a few girls or retired old people.

Most of the hard core guys

are off working late and too tired to get on the buzz.

Can't wait until fall when us real men have more time and whip this site back into shape.

Have fun for now children, girls and old farts.

When we get more time, we will come back and put you in your places. Under the guidelines of Mark and Tom of course.

Hope you survive Old Dirty. Maybe you will get a warning or small suspension.

or a punch in the face.

finally something interesting to read though (even if it is only drama)...

Ahhhh..... Old dirty cleaned up his post significantly. It originally had lots of mention of private parts and what people might do with them and such.....

too bad so sad if you missed the trash talk.

It's all cleaned up now.

Now it won't get deleted, but our following posts don't make much sense now.

It was a Jerry Springer show for a while.

I REALLY wasn't trying to start any wars when I started this thread.

Oh Chris, yes you did, that is your sole purpose on treebuzz; stirring things up and creating wars.

in the immortal words of the jerky boys, tv. very proud of ya. all's i know is that if i owned a own biz for 40+ years none of my iron would be 20 yrs or older. none of it. and in regards to all the crap you've accumulated, well duh, thats what is supposed to happen. also none of the chit you mentioned about possessing means anything to me. nothing. glad i don't have kids or marriage or a mortage. those are all headaches i have chosen to avoid. that gives me the ability to go and do as i please where i see a guy in your situation having to do. not me, pal.

we both know you'll never if ever put on that second jib to get that 150ft tip height because your sign crane won't be good for much outside the outrigger spread.

regarding the 3 yrs crane experience... once again, with me dealing with your senility, i am telling you ive been part of removing trees with a crane for like 13 yrs now. and no CA either. why? don't believe in it. i think its for the guys who can't actually do too much but need something to pad their self worth.

the only reason you have anything on me in the game is because your age. one day i too will be 40 yrs in the game and old as dirt. just like you.

and ppe is appropriate for the moment you step out the truck. that is a fact any true professional knows. that is the basics.

anyway, hopefully that alb gets some serious federal fundage and they call the pro's in to show you stiffs out there how to produce.

don't forget to soak your dentures tonight, oldtimer.

All,

Chris is the most genuine individual you could meet. He truly is only interested in improving himself as an Arborist. He asks multiple questions, volunteers his time to learn more, and is truly interested and believes in the responses he receives on here. But, the best way I can explain these responses to him is that if this were a McDonalds blog, you would realize who the best Fry Guys are because they will tell you. " It is better to be thought a fool than to speak up and remove all doubt". Chris, unfortunately this is no longer the place to seek advice from professionals. Good luck, sorry this thread got butchered.
