Regarding taking a break to have a smoke....that wouldn't fly with me, Im Ok with you smokin, but i aint gonna pay for your smoke breaks. You either smoke while you work (respectfully, and not around client), or you smoke on your own time.

I used to work on a crew of 5 guys, all smoked except me. I started getting disgruntled about them OFTEN taking cig breaks, then I started adding it up in my head (some would go through a pack JUST during the work day). Seemed like I was getting a bum deal here. So one day I was up in the tree about ready to drop the top. 3 of them were on the ground, the other in the back grinding. They had the portawrap all ready, then I just leaned back, had some water, and did nothing. I didn't say anything or do anything. I think at first they thought something was wrong. Then one yelled up, "what's going on?" I yelled back- oh, nothing- just taking a cigarrette break!" (in a very light hearted tone of voice)They laughed, walked away and said to let them know when I was done. Sure enough 2 minutes later the boss pulls up just to check on us. He asked the same, and I told hime the same, and he just lowered his head and walked away. He never said anything about it later. I think he knew it wasn't right.

So nothing was really accomplished in all that, but it's always fun to stir the pot!!! (Oh, the pot was a different issue we had with that crew /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif )

thats great Nick, they deserved it Im sure.

There is a large corporation just down the road from my house. No smoking on premises signs are posted evrywhere. Everytime i drive by there are 30 people standing at the lot entrance puffing away. And it doesnt matter what time it is, they are always there. My thoughts, give em a place around back to smoke so they dont look like picketers on the line. It looks bad for business to always have them there. Secondly, what is with paid smoke breaks? i dont get it. I would never allow paid smoke breaks, like i said, keep working or dont smoke, your choice.

Id be curious as to what all that smokin cost your old boss on a daily or weekly basis. Had to be a phenomanal(sp?) amount of money, thats why i wouldnt tolerate it.
oh well nuff bout smokin, Sorry x for Hijacking your thread.

Nick, I actually laughed out loud about the "pot" thing. that was funny.

John, no hijacking problem here. Hey, it keeps this post on the buzz board doesn't it, so no problem with that.

Re: Arbor-X needs one or two new workers in Bel Ai

It takes a strong backbone to install a no smoking at work rule.

A guy who worked for me told me that the Navy made him start smoking. Huh? When he was in the Navy the "smoke 'em if you got 'em" rule was in. If you didn't smoke you didn't get a break. Nick's ploy wouldn't work though. It doesn't take too long to figure out that you're getting cheated.

I read an article about a company that instituted a no smoking policy. That meant no smoking EVER! They gave everyone many months notice and supported people who took classes. A few people quit. They did an audit some time later and found that some people were still smoking. They got fired. This was a company that was involved in the health care industry.

The other day I read about a company in Michigan, I think, that was no longer going to employ anyone that smoked. They gave their employees 6 months to quit and paid for programs to help them quit. Then after the 6 month period they were going to start doing monthly random nicotine tests and anyone that tested positive was going to be terminated. They said that it was to lower their health insurance costs.
