Anyone in New England up for a winter rec climb?

Re: Anyone in New England up for a winter rec clim

I know a guy here in Northeast Ohio with about 30 acres of woods with some oak trees and alot of pine tree but the pines arent that tall. The guy I know is pretty nice and lets me do just about anything on his land. I can get permission for you guys to climb and It will be like a 90% chance that I can gain permission for the climb and there is no need for a waiver or liability insurance due to ohio law states that...

Ohio Revised Code 1533.181:

Exemption from liability to recreational users;

(A) No owner, lessee, or occupant of premises:

(1) Owes any duty to a recreational user to keep the premises safe for entry or use;

(2) Extends any assurance to a recreational user, through the act of giving permission, that the premises are safe for entry or use;

(3) Assumes responsibility for or incurs liability for any injury to person or property caused by any act of a recreational user.

(B) Division (A) of this section applies to the owner, lessee, or occupant of privately owned, nonresidential premises, whether or not the premises are kept open for public use and whether or not the owner, lessee, or occupant denies entry to certain individuals.

If you guys are willing to travel to Ohio I can go ask if this can be done on his land.

Re: Anyone in New England up for a winter rec clim

PM me if its a covert mission. I'll climb wherever.

The big pines are in Mohawk Trail state forest, I took a hike with the guy who found them and initially measured them, so I know which ones are the biggest. :-P

We just finished the climb. A little cold but we had a good time. Ended up being just two of us. Me and Chris Girard.
we climbed a 130'white pine. Nice views of mt Chocorua from the top. Man the wind was blowing!!!!!!!!

Hope it was fun. Sorry i couldn't make it. Next time. Boy it was cold for us here in MA. The wind was whipping at times.

Re: Anyone in New England up for a winter rec clim

Matt's being nice when he said it was a little cold. It was friggen freezing when we stopped climbing while up in the tree and very windy when we reached 120' within the Pine.

There was still another 10' above us, but with the wind gusting upwards of 40 mph, we decided not to go any higher, but Matt's right, what a view! With the wind chill it was around -20 to -25 degrees out.

Took me a little while to get my SRT line set with the Big Shot. I actually think the rubber needed a few shots too to warm up! I definitely need a 200' static lines to SRT in these big white pines!

On our way hiking back out, Matt found 2, even bigger pines to climb closer to where our trucks were parked, so those big boys are on the list for next time.

You guys missed an awesome (though cold) day up in the great Granite State of NH to climb, but we'll see you next time.

Thank you again to Matt for finding this site!

Re: Anyone in New England up for a winter rec clim

It is true I was pretty cold when I wasn't Climbing. planned on footlocking up the tree and my hands were too cold to wear my regular gloves. The thick winter gloves I was wearing made it impossible to grip the rope so I had to sit on my prussic for every footlock! Chris' system was WAY BETTER for a cold day he reached our initial TIP in like 2 minutes. First limb was at about 80 feet. My rope was the only rope we had that would make it. Both ends were almost touching the ground.climbing that tree was Not as easy as it could have been. Some day I might learn to bring the right tools for the right job!

I'm impressed you able to get a Big Shot throw over 80 feet on such a cold day.

Yeah, 80' up taking the top out of a red oak today, I definitely could have done without the 40mph gusts and wind chills in the negative teens.

Ended up taking the day off monday with the rain that came through and worked today, as opposed to our usual friday off, so woulda missed it regardless of weather, glad to hear somebody went out.

I realize its fun to be way up there, but whats the fascination with pines? Seems like an exercise in futility to just go straight up 100' and then just come back down, set up a rope swing or something.

[/ QUOTE ]I guess it is all about your frame of reference some people might call using a rope swing "an exercise in futility".

I'm not looking to offend, just curious why the push tends to lean towards climbing a tall pine. Either way its still a whole lotta work!

Really not that much work when you SRT. Like Matt said, once I got my TIP set with the Big Shot, I was able to ascend using a modified Frog Walker system fairly fast.

One of the reasons that I wanted to attend this climb, was to show other users the benefit of a proper SRT system, especially for tall conifers.

The thing that Matt and I had to watch out for during the first 60' or so was a lot of dead wood that we had to climb through, but it all went well.

Chris

Is that the Yampa I spy?

[/ QUOTE ]

Bull if you mean by Yampa, about my "hybrid system", then yes that Croll ascender is part of my SRT Frog Walker system. Other than that, I don't know what Yampa means, other than the Yampa river.

Didn't realize how my Hi-Vis shirt really shows when the flash goes off on a camera either.

Thank goodness Matt had a long enough line for both of us to descend on, because there was no way that we were going to tie in to those lower dead branches.
