Anyone Else Using The Knut Hitch???

Treeco,
How do you tie it? --Do you start with a VT and then at the bottom simply put an extra twist in each of the two braids?
Can you explain?

Also, if you don't mind, how is your hitch dif. from a prussik? --it appears similar in the photo.

Thanks for the clarifications.

Yes CharlieB, you caught me. /forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

My hitch is just two four wrap prussics. I'm thinking they may be combined in a unique way and have unique properties so I gave it a name.

I tie the one on the right first, then go to the left rope and tie the second prussic. Of course this could be reversed.

It takes a few tries to get the tail on each side to come out the same length but when they don't a little adjusting is easy without untying the knots. It can also be easily tied in a tress cord with the double fishermans knots pre tied in each end.

When I first started tying this knot I thought I could make it from a single cord made into a loop but I never could get it to work.

I want to stress again that my knot is un-tried and un-tested in auctual climbing. I have never used double ascenders.

This knot came to me sitting at the computer late one night when a few people at AS were brainstorming the idea of backing up double ascenders with a knot. It must have been 1AM or so and as much as I wanted to I resisted waking my wife and showing it to her. /forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Nick posted the same knot the next day but I had him by 8 or 10 hours or perhaps I'd be calling it Nicks hitch.

I'm guessing that tautlines and other knots may be joined together in the same fashion but I haven't given any of them a try.

The attached photo is of the other side of the knot.

Thanks Dan.
On the XT in the pic. that Mark said looked right:

Mark, you mentioned that you prefer your XT version to the Knut. I was wondering what the differnces are in hitch properties that you see between your XT version and the Knut as pictured in the Articles section?

http://www.treebuzz.com/pdf/climbing_hitches.pdf

Are your preferences based on using it mostly for SRT or DdRT? It seems that the same hitch acts differently depending on which method of ascent is used.

I'm curious as to how well it advances in comparison. Does the hitch self tend better because of the extra twists?

It looks like the coils would be held tighter and thus the XT would grab better. Do you find that to be the case?

Thanks,
Jim

Charlie,
It's much like the Vt except the tress cord is twisted around itself a time or two between braids on the climbing line. The pic shows this really well.

I've been climbing with the tx for a couple of days. The only difference I have found is it sets it's self better the the vt. When I when using the vt I find I have to set the knot my self most of the time. The tx is great, just as smooth as vt and sets it self every time.

Sorry for the delay gang (almost six hrs. now /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

My version of the XT is different in 2 ways. First, you do 4 wraps and then reverse the direction. This keeps the coils tighter and more regular.

Next is the dbl or triple cross on the second pass. Other than that it's the same. I like the performance of this version better because it holds as well as the others and still releases easily for me. Keep in mind that it's only my opinion of course!
