Any Pittsburgh climbers ?

Hello. Just signed up here. Pittsburgh area rookie climber looking forward to learning all I can here. Anyone local to me that I can watch and ask questions? Thanks for any advice in advance.

Yeah I'm south of Pittsburgh, but I'm a beginner myself so your questions would be limited to beer and women (which I know nothing about after all these years but I'll tell you anyway).

These guys on here I have to say are TOP notch.

P.S. I don't know anything about beer either.

I'm actually north in Cranberry. How far south are you? I majored in beer and women a few years ago. But married again now.

Welcome gentlemen from Da' Burgh!! Born and raised there, a long time ago. Lots of good people in the area. Try to get in touch with Jim Edson with Bartlett on the north side office if he is still with them and not retired and he will be able to set you up. Be sure to set aside the time to go to TCIA Expo, it will be money well spent! Learn to climb safely, efficiency will come with time. You are starting in this industry at an awesome time with all the inovations that are coming down the pipeline.

I'm down here in Washington.

We should start a club and call it, Pittsburgh Steeler Newb Tree Climbing Association (the Steeler part is for cred)

I hope I'm not stepping on his toes when I tell you this, but TreeBuzz member William_Piper lives in Pittsburgh, and it seems likely he is or was a veteran climber. Maybe you could send him a private message and see if he'd be willing to teach you some of what he knows.

Just sayin'.

Thanks Tim. When I get back from the beach I will try and find him on here.

Hey, jba, William_Piper responded to the thread and offered to meet up with you. I'm just writing this post so that you get a notification when you sign in, so you come back to this thread. It would be cool if you guys actually had a chance to climb together.

Hey Tim I'm back from the beach. Got in touch with Bill today. Very awesome guy. We are going to meet up and he is going to school me on some SRT techniques. Can't wait to meet him in person.

Well Tim I got to meet up with Bill today. What a wealth of knowledge. He brought all his gear for me to try out and actually sent me home with some of it to practice on at my place. Can't thank him enough. Thats Bill showing me how its done.IMG_20150716_122745464.webp

That is just too cool, jba! I'm really happy that it all came together! Bill sounds like a great guy, and a great guy to learn from.

Best wishes,

Tim

Is Bill actually ascending by footlocking in this photo? I'm wondering if that is his favorite mode of ascending. If so, Bill is a badass, and I have a new hero to add to my list of arb heroes!

Thanks again for posting. Hopefully you asked Bill if it would be ok to post his picture, just out of respect. Here's hoping you two have a long and fruitful friendship.

Bill used single foot lock because my SAKA and foot ascender were on John.

He was foot locking and let me try out some ascenders. I've never tried SRT before. And I was struggling after working a ten hour midnight shift. But it was cool and going to meet up again next week if possible. Yes he climbed right up there just foot locking. Hero yes. Mentor yes.

You are a tough guy, jba! I would have been falling asleep during the ascent after a 10 hour midnight shift. Bill might not have had to do an aerial rescue, so much as just whipping the rope around at the bottom to get me to wake up!
