On the point of the stats not supporting chainsaw protection aloft. I wonder if there are any stats showing how many of those that get hurt on the ground were climbers and thus not wearing the pants? Difficult, I know.
As for the heat argument, there are many professions that must wear protective clothing in situations of extreme heat, e.g., firefighters, and they don't have the option due to ambient temperature.
Ear protection: because a company opts for a comm system why should the employee then have to incur the additional expense for that piece of equipment? They could meet the letter of the law by buying cheap ear plugs or even their own muffs but then wouldn't have the comm system. The issue there is one of equipment hygiene. Might I suggest a policy of mandatory cleaning at the end of the shift to prevent an transmission of disease. You don't need to be a heavy sweater to contaminate a surface.
