Another trip -- West coast rec-climbing?

So I just got back from Alaska on Tuesday. The weather didn't cooperate with us /forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif, only 2 out of 8 days were clear enough to do any sightseeing and we got 18” of snow while we were there, but we made do. One day we drove north to Talkeetna and Denali National Park. Mt. McKinley was hidden behind clouds until just after sunset. The next day we drove south to Seward. That was one of the most amazing drives I have ever been taken. The entire road went through mountains. Pretty breathtaking….I’ll post some pics.

Anywho… more wanderlust to satisfy… For the next trip, my brother and I are planning on heading out west for two and a half weeks or so, we are leaving the end of next week. We are looking at some time in Colorado to try to cash in on some of Tom’s 300 days of sunshine. Might check out the southwest too, heard Zion’s pretty nice. One of the things we both would really like to do is climb (and maybe treeboat) some coastal redwoods in Cali or Oregon. My brother climbed some big Doug firs in Washington when ISA was there a few years ago and he had a blast. Does anybody out there in buzzville have a recommendation as to where we could get access to some big climbs on the coast? My current boss was at the Redwoods River Resort where they put up the trampoline (last year?). He told us to check that out. Anybody else have any input?

Thanks!
Zac

Welcome back Zac. Hopefully the weather will treat you a little better than Alaska did. Cant wait to see the picks.

If your looking for another trip when you get back we are heading out to see Shigo again in March!!!

A third trip? Hmmm.... The fiscal report will not be positive after I return from the west.

Have fun and don't let J-rod forget the tea and baby powder! /forum/images/graemlins/grinyes.gif

That picture of Resurection Bay is a beauty :)

If you're passing through Denver, let me know. Friends have a couple of large cottonwoods setup for rec climbing near Boulder. They said that the trees are spectacular. The national champion cottonwood, I think Plains Cwd, is near Boulder too.

Are you working for the ketchup and mustard company in Maple Grove? :)

I doubt this is legal, but a friend and I climbed our first redwood a few years back. We just drove down the "Avenue of the Giants" found a nice spot, pulled over on the side of the road (there are numerous pull off on this touristy road), hiked in a mile, then found us a nice tree.

I'm not reccomending or condoning this. I'm just saying we did it and I will do it again.

love

My wife and I hiked there this summer. The park has a great public transportation system and the scenery is spectacular. My wife is a geologist and she showed me some places there that make it into all of the standard geology textbooks.

Lots of people climb rec. out west. Just be careful if they think your an activist you might get shot but dodging bullets is fun once and awhile. Be gentle in the canopy there is an ecosystem up there that is only there. Stay on park land and the authority's don't get to mad. Safe travels
