Advancing the TIP

Ive carried a bag on my saddle for so long I cant remember , Its really no big deal . I weigh probably 215 geared up , whats 10 oz gonna matter lol. I use it on rigging lines as well to tip tie stuff . To each his own

My saddle bag starts working, and earning it's 10 oz., even before I leave the ground. There is a short loop of shoe lace tied to the ring. The loop is girth hitched to my rope about 2' from the ground. The saddle bag is there to add just a tiny bit of weight so that the rope self-tends while I ascend. Without the weight I'd have to reach down to strip out the loop of rope for the first couple of steps.

When I'm in the tree the saddle bag stays on the rope until I pull it up to change locations. Once I do that I clip it to the back of my saddle so that its handy to use for rope advancements.

It does more than 10 oz. of work for me on every climb.

Interesting to read, even as someone who goes SRT on awraptor then advances with a monkeyfist around a steel snap for weight, typically using a 5m or 7m pole tool, which i like to have to reach the tips anyway. typically ddrt after tying in with the snap and simple friction hitch, though in a thin-barked tree or a tight crotch can do srt with a pantin to reach the peak. I have a pouch with a black widow mini-bull rope and an 8 oz bag to advance it, but only bring it when i know i have tricky lowering to do.

I just saw a client from 3-4 years ago and she said nothing about the excellent work we did (no news is usually good news about tree-patients), but went on and on about how she adored the panorama shots i got of her homestead. :D

That's a really good customer service idea. I'll bet most people would appreciate that. I am going to try that.
I've done a video documentation of the view from the top of a very tall tree that I was removing since the view would never be there again in the owner's lifetime. They loved it. The husband made a short film using my clip as a portion of it and shared it with his family.

Pretty sure my throw bag is a 14oz'er. No tag on it anymore, but seems much heavier than the 8/10/12 in my cube.

It amazing what client's remember about the work we do. They'll be more elated over how clean you've left their yard and drive!
True...sometimes, though we often have unrefined landscapes to work in, and significant latitude to fudge with smaller debris. There are still times in which the cleanup feels like a second job.

I have actually used a throw ball and line, then anchored the back to where was at time of setting my line in the tree, then advanced up and re set. A crucial part of this was I had a 30' work position lanyard (could use another rope) to descend back down on to untie my anchor point.

I like two have 2 short loopie slings with me and a biner for each. I will "lead" climb like a rockclimber, placing fall protection as I go. This is usually done when my TIP is in another tree, and I don't want to take a swing. This way I can freely use my lanyard for work positioning and not worry about taking my hands off the tree... there is probably a fancy retrievable version of this technique as well. But I havent gone that far.

I use a throwline in the tree. Sometimes that next toss 20' directly overhead is kinda awkward, so my next project is a small in tree slingshot. Not really a lot of gear.

When I get serious about going from tree to tree or needing to advance my tie in point on tall trees with lots of distance to the next branch, this is what I use.

Small cube for in tree throw line management, dual chalk line, "little" shot sling shot, one of the new Buckingham Bismuth Throw Weights from treestuff.com I'm looking forward to using. Thanks Tree Stuff for TAKING THE LEAD OUT.

How much line do yall carry in your bag when using the weighted line in the tree?
I just wind Zing-it onto a fly reel until the reel is full. I believe it amounts to something in the neighborhood of 50'. Whatever length it is, it has always been sufficient.

I like that dual chalk line YOYO. I believe I've seen you use it on one of your vids. For traversing, you can cross a limb and one is being let out as the other is being reeled in. Seems pretty slick.

That Hyperdog is a serious little slingshot. I just made a handheld slingshot using exercise band material. It's pretty snappy but I have yet to try it in a tree. Question: Bismuth is diamagnetic (opposes magnetic field) right? Don't you need steel shot to work with the magnets?
