adopting trees

My buddy at Wolf Tree awhile back told me they were going to try and adopt some trees from the city. Just curious has anyone else done this? It seems like a good marketing strategy. You adopt the tree maintain it, fertilize, prune etc... maybe place a plaque there and a sign. Ideal locations I'm guessing would be major intersections,Parks, and walking trails. Would you pick healthy trees that look good already or one that needs work to nurture it back to health. Unhealthy tree you could place before and after photos. What are your thoughts?

from a marketing point of view it seems a bit of a long shot.

From a legal point of view, whose liable if an adopted city tree falls and kills someone?

Great point...I think by adopting tho its like when someone adopts a highway. You get your name on it; nobody sues you when they slide on black ice because you didn't salt the road.

yes but someone could easily sue you for neglecting a dangerous tree you were overseeing the maintenance of.

Maybe it's a good idea? I dunno, why dont you try it out and let us know how it's goin in a year's time?

if it's a success then we could all start doing it

We adopted two Live Oaks about three years ago. They flank the court house which sits in the middle of town at the intersection of two state highways. I would definately do it again, it has been all positive for us. As far as marketing it has brought attention to our company, however I would not take on the responsibility of caring for public trees just for a marketing boost. The real reward is the feeling. Every man on our crew plus my family love those trees and take pride in caring for them.

This is something I would love to do. I tried looking up some info for doing this in the state of TN but didn't come up with much, just some hippie BS about talking to your tree and touching your tree haha.

"Adopt A Tree" is a very popular activity in the Project Learning Tree curriculum, aimed at older kids.

I've "adopted" a lot of older public trees, in terms of specifying and carrying out treatments. In terms of getting sued; no worries if work is to standard imo. No reason to let the paranoia work overtime.

re hippie BS there was a guy named Alex who STRONGLY recommended that we touch the trees that we work on, and learn from them. What a wacko; who could take him seriously about anything?
