adjustable friction savers

I was wondering what type of set ups everyone was using for adjustable friction savers. I didn't know if there was someone's set up that adjusts smoother than others in their opinion. I am pretty open to about anything with it comes to it. What cordage are you guys using as well for your friction savers. Right now I made one using tenex that I covered with one inch webbing.

I have 3. This 1 is made from 3/8" tech12 (18,000# tensile). There is a 4' Buck R & R for length comparision.

Another is a 6" Buck ring & ring w/ a small ring spliced on 3/8" tenex.

The last is NE 1/2" X 20' braided Safety Blue. Large ring eye spliced on 1 end, with a small ring spliced on 3/8" tenex as a prusik. Made this 1 long before the 11mm ropes came out.

One way to make it more useful is to use an appropriate carabiner instead of the large ring. That way it speeds up the process of adjusting. You can just unclip, move and reclip.

It isn't as noticeable if all of your climbing lines are spliced. This way is much faster if they aren't.

Tim, I JUST switched my rope guide from having a large ring to having a carabiner. I had to do some toying around to see which carabiner would allow the pulley to fit through, but NOT let the adjuster slip through, but eventually found one in my stash that works perfectly.

Norm, nice friction savoopie!

I use about 10' poison ivy spliced onto the big ring. HRC with double fishermans on the small ring tied on with a prussic. Then a stopper knot at the end. Simple, easy and cheap.

Yes, the "savoopie" is a good name. I like the "Whoopie Saver" personally.

What are you all using adjustable FS for? Working down a spar? Is there a real use for it in pruning work?

I will admit, "whoopie saver" IS a better name.

I like adjustability for two reasons. 1- like you said- when working down a spar. But 2- in pruning sometimes in some trees (ie ash, elm, and any heavily lionstailed tree) there might not be a great TIP crotch, but I can see where I would want my TIP to be. Even if there is no crotch, I can cinch down the FS on a branch and have a good TIP

Other than that, when pruning, I usually leave it long so it can wrap around the tree as I move around the tree.

Re: adjustable false crotch

When I climb on DdRT I'll generally use either my webbing or rope Rope Guide.

Having an adjustable false crotch is great for pruning. Sometimes you want to get your hitch up as high as possible. Then you'd have the FC choked around the TIP. When you work down a ways on the rope you could slack it off to allow the FC to wrap around the tree.

Before I got the RGs I used a rope one like this...

Re: adjustable false crotch

I like that one, looks much less expensive than buying the cocoon pulley or like pulley. I could probably find a pulley I have in my stash to make that one!!! I cant wait to get off work now!

Ditto. Sometimes you gotta wrap the thing.
I use the long 1 for workin on spars, just in case I gotta bail.

I can wrap my 4' fixed FS when theres no fork. I've got a 2' FS for when I don't need the longer one.

I've never used an adjustable FS on a spar. Recently I started using Otis' creation and its working great for removals.

The one I made is out of Samson Tech 12. Its maybe 3-4' long. Its the same principle as tying a running bowline w/ long tail that can be pulled down from the position of your next cut... theoretically.

The Monkey Tail works a lot smoother. Definitely a tool I take with me for bigger removals.

I'll try to get a few pictures.

Thought I'd add a pic of the one I use. I just made a new one so it's nice and shiny. :)
